Lydia’s sister, Sonia just a match away from U-15 title

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur’s Sonia Cheah Su Ya showed that she was on the right track in following in the footsteps of her sister, Lydia, when she reached her first Under-15 girls’ singles final in the national schools (MSSM) badminton championships at the Kuala Terengganu Indoor Stadium yesterday.

The 14-year-old Sonia, who is four years younger than Asian Junior runner-up Lydia, defeated Yang Li Lian of Selangor 21-19, 21-13 in the semi-finals. She will take on Kedahan Ng Sin Er in the final.

Sin Er, who is a student of the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) together with Sonia, trounced Pahang’s Lai Pei Jing 21-13, 21-9 in another semi-final. She will also feature in the doubles final, partnering Lim Pei Shuan.

Five other players are also in line for a double. They are Loh Wei Sheng (Negri Sembilan, boys’ Under-15), Iskandar Zulkarnain (Johor, boys’ Under-18), Cheah Yee See (Penang, girls’ Under-12), Tee Jing Yi (Penang, girls’ Under-18) and Tiffany Chase Currier (Malacca, girls’ Under-18).

Lots of brothers in badminton. Malaysia alone has at least two famous ones, Sideks and Hashims.

But are there any famous sisters in international badminton, past and present?

I saw her played yesterday and this morning. She lost to the Kedah. girl in the final in 3 sets. For a 14 years old she has good skills and she is very agile on court.

Keep it up. Sonia. if u see this forum. Jia U.

This is the first time i heard of her. Is she as tall as Lydia? Lydia really has great aggression and potential.
