St. Jakobshalle, Basel txt: Dille Andersen, WBSO, Int.Press photo: www.topbadminton.com The young Indonesian talent, Simon Santoso, through from the Qualifying event, takes yet another step up at this event. Today he was up against 5/8 seed Chen Yu, CHN, who last week was runner-up at the All England. Santoso played with great confidence throughout this match and took the lead from the very first stroke. First game was won with 21-10. One decisive factor was the play at the net - Santoso succeeded, Chen Yu didn't. As the match progressed Chen Yu seemed lack of confidence that he could turn it around to his own advantage. In the second game Santoso continued where he left off in the first. He kept controlling the net and furthermore sent Chen Yu from corner to corner. Chen Yu was not very good friend with the lines today, and he didn't at all play with the same spirit and confidence as he did in England just last week. Although being the better part in the second game, Santoso didn't make an ultimate break in the score until 7-7. Chen Yu didn't succeed with anything at by the minute his confidence seemed to drop off him. On numerous occassions he sent the shuttle out the backline. Santoso to the game 21-12 on the first match ball. In Women's Singles Yanjiao Jiang, CHN, beat Hye Houn Hwang, KOR, 21-14, 21-18.
I would Guess mental fatigue more than anything. He has played a lot of mathes recently, reaching German and AE finals. Simon played consisently, with few errors, but nothing special, CY made many erros, and didn't seem to have inclination to attack.
I was shocked when I saw Simon beated Chen Yu. Could it be a fluke like Dickey Palyama beating Peter Gade?
That wasn't a fluke. It was a one-off, wherby Dickys tactics were supported by his consistency in pulling it off, maintaining a strategy, and Gade not responding and changing his own. It may not happen again, but that does not make it a fluke-a fluke is all luck.
not be a surprise , Simon santoso is great, he play well, all indonesian now have allready forced by PBSI to do the best due to no Taufik Hidayat in some events, and simon santoso also ever beat chen yu in world camps junior before, no "sureprice"
im just wondering how old Simon Santoso is. i always read about him being a young player but they never state his age.
if i not mistaken, 20 years old, and after heim, its still 1 young guns of indonesia , he is Tommy Sugiarto, 17 years old,
only LD can throw a match. LD is imo a level above chen yu and bcl, same goes for LCW, hafiz. Only kuncoro, PG and CJ might have a chance of upsetting LD on his (LD) bad day.
hahaha, not on purpose tho. I was gonna edit that post but then u pop this question, so fast I would put TH in the camp with PG, kuncoro, CJ. I also forgot about KJ, he kinda different, i would put KJ between the above 2 groups. Santoso improvement is quite surprising, he isnt that tall. I guess he is honing his skills to mimic TH, work the net and induce a nice 3/4 lift.
It must be a fixed match by LYB, CY should play better than that and this match is ........ oh wait ........... Simon is from Indo right? since when have he joined team China???
I think neither Bao or Chen Yu want to play Lin Dan (no point giving LD a walkover), so LYB ordered them to lose to their opponents so Lin Dan can chop them to pieces.... LIN DAN POWER!!!!! Lin Dan is going to show the world that he doesn't need walkovers and can beat anyone (other than his team-mates) in the final.
Chen Yu is like, 27 years old this year! and Simon is only around 20. How can they play each other in world junior champs?
