Simon Leaves Korea Open With Much-Needed Boost
Simon Leaves Korea Open With Much-Needed Boost
Ami Afriatni | January 30, 2011
Simon Santoso may have lost in the semifinal of the Korea Open Super Series Premier, but the recently recovered Indonesian shuttler definitely gained back much of his confidence.
Simon gave Chinese ace Lin Dan all he could handle before losing 23-21, 20-22, 21-15 in their men’s singles match at Seoul’s Olympic Gymnasium on Saturday.
Even though Simon failed to get past the reigning Asian Games champion, the 25-year-old said the hard-fought match has helped to boost his morale after spending much of 2010 recovering from a back injury.
“I didn’t give up easily and I’m proud of myself for that,” said Simon, the only Indonesian to reach the semifinal of the inaugural Premier Series tournament.
“Before the match [against Lin], I kept telling myself not to give in to the pressure and just relax. That’s how you approach a match when you’re up against a tough opponent like Lin.
“I needed to be more patient and that’s what I did, although I still fell short.”
Simon has proven that he has regained the form that made him a consistent top 10 player.
During the Malaysia Open earlier this month, he scored the biggest upset of the tournament by downing world champion Chen Jin of China.
In Seoul, he made heads turn by eliminating European No. 1 Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark in the quarterfinals, before pushing Lin to the limit. Lin eventually won the men’s singles title, beating Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia 21-19, 14-21, 21-16 in Sunday’s final.
Simon said he liked the progress he has made and looked forward to getting more matches under his belt.
“I need to play more to get better. It’s as simple as that,” he said.
