...what video editing software do you recommend for compressing the file down?

On my camera a 10 minute video at 640x480 in SHQ is over 600MB, and 250MB in HQ. I just need to compress the file. Any suggestions?

I decided to do a bird's-eye view so the stringing can be more easily seen and understood.

    Please advise, thanks!

Maybe try lowering the quality of the video? No clues on softwares though.

No, then it's hard to see the detail, which is the whole point.

Yes, please do not ask me any more questions on this. I just need to know what editing software to use.

I don't think there is one software that can do both editing and compression. You have to edit and save as a big un-compress format and then use another to convert. I normally convert to DivX. Depending on quality, a full size DVD movie 4GB+ can be converted down to about 700MB. You can try WinAvi (www.winavi.com) or Auto GK (http://www.autogk.me.uk/). If you can find a converter to real format (.rmvb), that should be smaller but I haven't tried.

Just got this link from a friend of mine, you want to try this link??..

Dan, sorry i'm not much of an expert, but if you want, you can try this site and see if you can download some *free* video converting programs/softwares?? Sorry, can't guide you to a specific one, because as BadFever mentioned, there are different programs/softwares for each and there are tons of them out there. I don't know what format you are compressing it from. But for what i know & heard, if you have an MPEG2 format, it is already very good. Reducing/compressing it down to say an .rmvb format, though very small, will decrease its quality:
    http://www.videohelp.com/convert
Once there, on the left column there's a Tools link(under LISTS). Once you click on the link, you should see several websites which offer some *free* softwares. Again, i haven't visited nor used any of them..so you might give 'em a try...Best of luck!;)

Welcome to the art of video compression! :)

There is no hard and fast rule - some content compresses more easily than others. Programs such as virtualdub are simple enough to recode many things, but you'll need encoding codecs - most people only download playback codecs. K-Lite codec is a good place to start.

    Here's some other ideas:
    * 640x480 is nice, but can you make do with 512x384?
    * Audio tracks are arguably more important than video, but savings can still be garnered here.

The best way is to keep a raw file that you can experiment on until you find the settings you are after for. To get sizes down requires a lot of compromise, so be prepared to sit through and watch your video a lot :)

I dont claim to be an expert but I do a lot of video editing as a hobby.

I have this package called Cyberlink/Power link for burning Dvds.

everytime a fike is ready for burning one can select HQ,Sq or Eq or smart fit onto a standard 4.7 G disc.

My DVD recorder of China ancestry costing Us$100 can burn Hq,Sp,Lp,Eq or EQ+.

Nero the common software has very limited flexibilty esp in compression.

Win AVI should be the most versatile just like Virtual Dub.

Incidently, Nero for all its limitations allows users to burn 16 min of MPEG2

as DVD on a standard Cd,

I dont know what 16m of MPEG 2 in HQ means relative to SP, EQ,LP etc.

The frame rates appear sam eto me, only resolutions of pictures are different.
Sure would like some pointers as to how all these terms are related.

How about to make one in SHQ and put it on Bit-Torrent and ask people to download it from there. Burn it onto a CD and watch it on a DVD player. I will PM you tonight.
