Darkened Skin underneath Eyes
When you train when your not feeling great or just tired or dehydrated or something does anyone get dark patches under their eyes? Underneath my eyes for up to an hour after I play if I am not feeling that great I get these patches. It makes me look half alive. Anyone know what it is?

I know there's a lot more to it, but part of the reason for the dark patches under your eyes is lack of water that results from problems you may experience during intense or over-training, like dehydration.

I've had intense ones since I was 13, as a result of stress, lack of sleep, depression, dehydration, overtraining, etc.
It's pretty tough to get rid of them, even with sleep.

now that you say i always noticed chen jin has lines under his eyes (same thing?)
makes him look like a senior...

Better hydration & adequate sleep should both help. Might also try some meditation for 10-20 minutes, once or twice a day to alleviate eye/brain fatigue.

they are only there after training when my body isn't working as well as it should.

What is eye and brain fatigue? Sometimes when I'm tired my eye twitches.

Stay up all night writing a report (or two even) - then you'll know what brain and eye fatigue are .

because of lack of sleep(8-7 hours a night, should be getting 9 or 10 would be really nice...) and all my studies i get black under my eyes, i never knew it had to do with dehydration thow, i will start drinking alot more water now.

is meditation the only way to alleviate eye and brain fatigue? i guess both ees and brain are still being used when u sleep.

For me, reading a book for more than 15 minutes results in visual (& mental) fatigue. This is due to a convergence problem that some ppl, like myself, have. For many ppl, having to track an object in motion, such as a badminton shuttle, will cause fatigue after an exteneded period of time (esp if the eyes are already a bit tired due to lack of sleep or some other reason).
When the eyes are tired (fatigued), they might not focus easily or effectively. They may become more sensitive to bright light or unable to deal with subdued lighting. Binocular vision (eye converegence) can also be compromised. Depth perception can suffer and the ability to track a moving shuttle may also be diminshed.
Quite often eye fatigue and mental (brain) fatigue are closely related -- they are often 2 sides of the smae coin. Eye strain or fatigue can result in headaches or other manifestations of mental fatigue. By the same token, a headache or mental stress can eventually be felt in the eyes.
When we are mentally fatigued, our brain does not function well. We are unable to think as clearly. Our ability to concentrate and mentally focus deteriorate. Our attention span diminshes. We will also have a bit more trouble making split-second decisions, which are very important for badminton & other sports.

Note that mediation, altho' extremely helpful, is not really a substitute for adequate sleep. Getting enuff sleep, quality sleep, is very important to maintianing peak performance while playing badminton and throughout rest of the day.
When we sleep (& sometimes when we meditate), we are usually in an environment with very low light levels. For both sleep & most types of mediation, the eyelids are also closed so that even less light impinges on our eyes. This reduction of light levels helps our eyes to relax & rejuvenate.
During sleep, the eyes and brain are most active during REM sleep cycles. During a full night of sleep we normally epxerience 4 or 5 REM (Rapid Eye Movement) cycles -- these are the dream cycles. These active REM cycles represent only a small portion of our total sleep. Sleep consists of 5 different stages of sleep (if you consider REM as a seperate stage from non-REM Stage 1 sleep).
During each of the (4 or) 5 stages, the brain activity is different. During REM and non-REM Stage 1, the brain produces brain waves that are somewhat similar to the wake state -- alpha waves & some beta waves which higher frequencies than other sleep stages. In the wake state we produce a lot of beta waves when we are stressed or excited. When we are more relaxed, our brain produces a mix of beta & alpha waves.
The smuch lower brain wave frequencies that are present in deeper stages of sleep (esp stages 3 and 4), indiate that our brains are not very active at that time. To give you a greater appreciation for getting a full night of quality sleep, I am including the following 2 graphics that are slightly differnent versions of our normal sleep cycles. If we do not get a full measure of sleep then we deprive our mind-body of going thru the full range of sleep cycles -- as a result we might not be fully rested and our body & mind cannot fully rebuild & recharge.

Whoa this is one of those "can of worms" subjects. I've read that bags under the eyes can hereditary, result of stress or fatigue and even an indication of the build up of toxins in the body. Most people will get the eye rings when they are going into shock.
Do a search online and you'll find a ton of stuff.
