Does anyone else think that CH retirement is kind of a farce? Why would Victor sponsor a retired player? If anything I think Chen Hong is 'semi'retired.

I heard some rumors about he might be joining Taiwanese National team. I hope that's true so Taiwanese can get some really quality player.

maybe it's just a promotional racquet for the unveiling of the sponsporship.
like when the major of a town hands over the 'keys' to the town to one of its occupants.

Most companies use retired players to promote their products. Carlton Still have Rasmussen rackets, Victor Also sponsor Ge Fei, Kawasaki sponsor Gong Zi Chao. It is not about whether they are playing or not, but about how marketable they are.

It states that Chen Hong will continue to participate in International and National tournaments as an individual player.

Can he do that for International tournaments? It would be nice if he can really do that.

Yes. Many players do this. Lee Tseung Seng, Sigit, Tony/Candra, Andrew Smith to name but a few. The difference with those is that they are supported by their Clubs (KLRC/Djarum). I would imagine CH is solely supported by Victor.

The only stipulation is that their national body must accept the application (as you must be yourself affiliated to a WBF Affiliated nation to enter WBF tournaments).

With respect to the ABC is there any restriction on the number of players from one country who can play? If so I think if china were going to send their full allocation, then CH would not be in it (even if World No. 1).

This will add some spice to the meetings against his former countrymen now at least.

he did not retire from badminton. Essentially, he retires from being a slave to CHN team A, specifically to LD.

Li Yongbo doesn't care, i think.
Chen Hong is off the primary team, no longer in the way of budding young talents.
So long as Chen Hong does not go play for other nations, he will not mind at all.

Sponsorship issues? not at all. Li Yongbo does not care who wishes to give money to Chen Hong to play.... He can fly the banner of Victor or Kason or Apacs or Head, or anyone else, just as long as he's not flying another nation's flag on his chest.

Chen Hong is back just two months after quitting

BEIJING: China’s Chen Hong will return to action just two months after announcing his retirement at the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in Johor Baru next week.
The 27-year-old world number six is not planning to reclaim a spot in the national team, although he still harbours hopes of playing in the Beijing Olympics next year.
“I can’t stay away from badminton. I love it so much,” Chen Hong told internet portal sina.com.
“I don’t want to waste my talent. I’m still striving for the Olympics.”
As he has left the national team, Chen Hong will have to pay for his own training and cover the expense of participating in the tournaments he needs to play to gain Olympic qualifying points.
“Now I’m not a member of the national team, but a totally free player, an individual enterprise,” said Chen Hong, who is married to Taiwan international Ku Pei-Ting, who will also feature in the ABC. Chen Hong won back-to-back titles at the China and Denmark Opens late last year but was dropped from the national squad for Doha Asian Games, a decision he attributed to his age. – Reuters

the easiest way to make li yongbo die of high blood pressure and heart attack is to lure chen hong to malaysia. LCW and CH can easily be no.1 and no.2 in malaysia anytime. but, that's just a silly impossible dream. don't hope too much. haha..
