Something that got in my mind on Friday's match - I have this rather unhealthy liking of going into a smashing duel as the defender sometimes. At times I'd deliberately lift it high just to wait for the other side to pepper us (I only play doubles...) stupid with smashes that gets lifted back again and again and again and again...

It's almost like contest of wills for some sort - the endurace of the attacker to keep pummeling the shuttle hard to the rubber/parquet/wood/cement, the mental concentration of the receiver to keep making quality returns ie high to the back of the court.

I understand it's unwise to deliberately concede the attacking advantage to the other team but you just can't beat the feeling of being 'unkillable' when everything they threw to you including the kitchen sink gets returned back.

Furthermore, against similar levelled players it could well wear them out
    which is not too bad.

Come on, help prove that I'm no freak here. ;)

yeah, i do that as well.
i think at our level, most of us have a better defense than attack anyways, so the strategy often pays off in the long run if the opponent tires out.
but, if you're playing a stronger pair with a mighty smash, then i'd advise keep it low and driving a lot more.
    fun though! :D

Hear, hear. I liked being smashed at in singles, especially from the back corners, as it puts the opponent under SO much pressure to recover position. By the time they are in the air I have picked out where I will poke the return. Personally, I never smash unless I'm fairly certain it's going to be a winner, as, at 200lb, a smash drains me badly.

From what limited stuff I've seen on TV, there are some Chinese pairs who actually structure their entire game around having smashes drilled at them, only to do cheeky flicks into the resulting gaps. Smashing really does take it out of a player, so this is a very justifiable tactic.

they take shifts under one username;)

    on-topic: err..no, not for me..

you sound like my ideal opponent though:p (because since I smash like a sissy I vary my smash/drop a lot)

I have to admit it's fun to do..But in real matches, I get a kick out of setting defense into offense with a good defense:D
    Whener that happens off course:p

    a cunning plan!

hmmm, i do it for matches as well, hahaha, but then again i'm never too serious even for matches, let alone for club games. but then if my opponent has a bomb of a smash, i try to keep things low, if i remember.
