Khe Wei bids for Olympic glory

PETALING JAYA: Lanky Woon Khe Wei is determined to become the youngest Malaysian women shuttler to feature in the Olympic Games.
And in a bid to get her ambitious plan on the right track, the 18-year-old Khe Wei is all geared up to put up a good showing in the Singapore Open in the mixed doubles event with partner Tan Wee Kiong.
The US$250,00 Singapore Open from May 1-6 is the first tournament that will kick off a one-year Beijing Olympic Games qualifying period.
The Open is also the first major tournament outside the country for Khe Wei and Wee Kiong, who had completed their Form Five studies at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) last year.
In fact, Khe Wei is one the three lucky juniors girl selected recently by national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky to be groomed as the mixed doubles specialists in the national team.
The other girls are Goh Liu Ying and Ng Hui Lin. Liu Ying will partner Mohd Lutfi Zaim Abdul Khalid while Hui Lin pairs up with Lim Khim Wah.
As part of forming lethal mixed doubles partnerships for the Beijing Olympic Games, these juniors led by Khe Wei, are now training full time with the elite men’s doubles players at the training centre in Bukit Jalil.
Khe Wei, who stands at 1.72m, is thrilled over the change of fortune in her badminton career.
“It is a great feeling to be training along side the elite players. The training under coach Rexy is tough but it is fun. I look forward to every session,” she said.
During her junior days, Khe Wei's best achievements with Wee Kiong was winning the German Junior Open title in March this year and finishing as the Asian Junior Championships runners-up in Kuala Lumpur last year.
Initially, the plan was to pair Khe Wei with senior Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif but incompatibility forced Rexy to maintain the former with her regular partner Wee Kiong.
On her challenge in the Singapore Open with Wee Kiong: “We have to play in the qualifying round. Reaching the main draw will be a great start for us.”
They are expected to meet Hong Kong's Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama-Chau Hoi Wah in the second round of the qualifying tournament.
If they make it, they will take on either South Korean Hwang Ji-man-Kim Min-jung or Japanese Keita Masuda-Miyuki Maeda for a place in the main draw. The other Malaysian mixed doubles pairs competing in the Singapore Open are Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui, Liu Ying-Mohd Lutfi Zaim Abdul Khalid, Hoon Thien How-Ooi Sock Ai and Gan Teik Chai-Haw Chiou Hwee.

Woon Khe Wei.. :D I knew her when I was 9 or 10. Not exactly KNOW her, but she was my senior (2 yrs elder) in primary school. She was a famous athlete in school since then, in running, high jump, long jump and badminton. I envy her a lot. :)

Woon Khe Wei/Vivian Hoo was totally wiped out by Pan Pan/Tian Qing.
Good effort nonetheless for getting the silver medal. Try again next time. These two might succeed Chin Eei Hui/Wong Pei Tty as MAS No. 1 WD

But what about XD? For Khe Wei and TWK while both are playing WD and MD respectively?
