Shuttlers travel for hope and glory

Matheos Viktor Messakh, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 06/30/2010 9:25 AM | Sports

A former coach says badminton for Indonesia is perhaps like soccer for Brazil. In pursuit of glory — and money, ultimately — Brazilians swarm around the world to play soccer — just like Indonesians for badminton.

The difference is that Brazilians are almost always willing to defend their national honor and fight for their country. For some Indonesians, playing abroad means a switch in allegiance.

Not that it’s bad. In truth, they never really leave behind their identity as Indonesians even when playing for other countries.

Ask Tony Gunawan, winner of a 2000 Olympic Games men’s doubles gold medal with Candra Wijaya for Indonesia, who is now playing for the US and coaching for that country.

“Wherever I play, people will not forget that what made me what I am is Indonesia. Needless to say, I am still an Indonesian,” Tony told The Jakarta Post at the Djarum Indonesia Open Super Series last week.

Tony decided to move to the US with his fiancée Eti Tantra in 2002 and was married in the same year. He joined the Orange County Badminton Club in Anaheim, California, where he still trains and coaches. He also studied computer engineering at the DeVry Institute and Westwood College.

..it's going to take a bit of time for INA to produce the same talents like during the Tony-Candra-Sigit-Halim-Flandy-Eng Hian era..From those 6 players, 3 are coaching overseas with only Candra and Sigit still coaching in INA/playing part time..and Flandy playing as a free-agent player..

Looking at the (slow) progress of the current younger INA national players, anyone here still up for the idea of selecting independent players like Taufik Hidayat, Markis Kido & Hendra Setiawan to participate in future team events (Thomas & Uber Cup or Sudirman Cup) eventhough they are no longer part of the national team/training center (but to some, are still considered the best the INA can offer)??..and even if they reach the age of 35 or older??..

I'm on the opinion they should select Pelatnas players only..time to move on..

    Officials Mulling Foreign Hires

The poor results being rendered by Indonesian shuttlers could force the national badminton federation to resort to one extreme measure to improve their play — hiring a Chinese coach.

Sabar Yudo Saroso, vice president of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), has been quoted by local media as saying it was possible foreign coaches would be tapped to oversee the national team training camp and that getting coaches from China, the country’s long-time rival in the sport, was “a viable option.”

I Gusti Made Oka, the other PBSI vice president, said there were no concrete plans yet to hire foreign coaches but such a proposal was being considered.

“[The idea] is there, but it hasn’t been deliberated on,” Oka said. “It was just one of the many suggestions forwarded to the PBSI in order to improve the national training system currently in place, including improving coaching techniques and athlete recruitment. The PBSI is open to any ideas.”

Oka said the suggestion was brought up during an evaluation of the national team, which has shown a decline in performance in the last two years, particularly in the top-level Super Series.

Rian/Yoke will have their final performance at WC ( this year) as Rian may end up to one of neighboring countries...
Ahsan/Bona will stay as the coash has not found one for Ahsan..

Since the XD coach believe more on Tantowi/Butet's partnership. Devin may play Men Doubles with Nugroho(Gepeng, single player turned to Double player)..They will participate at INA Challenge.

Well, actually we still in progress to groom another world class pairs. We will see how Ryan/Angga, Rendy/Afiat, & Berry/Ulin continue to growth and develop their skills and mentality. Just need to be patient.

Indonesian Badminton Coaches Not Interested in Hiring Foreigners

National team coaches have criticized a suggestion by the badminton federation to add foreigners to the coaching staff, saying that would not solve the problems facing the sport.

The Indonesian Badminton Association’s (PBSI) vice president, Sabar Yudo Saroso, hinted last week at a plan to hire foreign coaches, particularly from China, in response to the struggles of the country’s shuttlers on the international stage.

But national mixed doubles coach Richard Mainaky said the PBSI had lost sight of the real problems facing the sport.

“Players who enter the national training camp come from clubs, but these clubs have failed to train players to perform at a very high level,” Richard told the Jakarta Globe on Monday.

“The poor training at the club level affects the way players perform, and these players in turn carry their habits onto the national team.”
