Djarum eyes more world and Asian junior titles

Amid the lackluster performances of the senior shuttlers, Djarum, the country’s premier badminton club, remains upbeat about the prospects for their youngsters as it aims at producing more Asian and world junior champions throughout this year’s competition season.

“This year, we hope to push our juniors to win more titles at both the Asian and World junior championships,” Djarum club chairman Yoppy Rosimin said on the sidelines of an award ceremony for the club’s best athletes of 2011 on Tuesday.

“For our youngsters, we are eyeing at least five to six international junior tournaments, including in Holland and Germany. Overall this year, we hope that each of our shuttlers can compete in at least 10 tournaments both at home and abroad.”

Yoppy also highlighted the urgency of extra monitoring of the shuttlers’ progress, not only through the number of competitions attended but also the number of matches.

“For them to have sufficient experience, they will need to play at least 20 to 30 tournament matches per year. So, we hope to be more attentive in that aspect, not only their tournament appearances,” said Yoppy, while also reminding the shuttlers of the importance of self-awareness in injury-prevention treatments while in competitions.

This year’s World Junior Badminton Championship will be staged in Chiba, Japan from Oct. 25–Nov. 4, with the Asian Junior Badminton Championship from April 17–22 in Sichuan, China.

The club’s talented juniors seized a couple of titles at last year’s Asian Junior Badminton Championship in Lucknow, India and the World Junior Badminton Championship in Tao Yuan, Taiwan.

Badminton: Victorious Shuttlers Stunned by Exit

Winning apparently isn’t enough for shuttlers to keep their place in the national team.

Fresh off a victory in the Bangladesh International Series in December, 20-year-old Alrie Guna Dharma felt good about his place in the national training camp when the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) awarded new contracts this week.

“I felt relaxed at that time because I was confident I would stay at Pelatnas [the training camp] for at least one more year,” Alrie said.

He was in for a surprise, though. Rather than a contract, men’s singles coach Li Mao brought him the bad news that he had been sacked.

“I was shocked. I really didn’t expect this,” he said on Thursday. “[Li] only said he was sorry that I was among them who were relegated. He said the training camp had only eight slots open for junior players.”

Alrie was not the only recent winner to get the axe. Putri Muthia Restu, who beat teammate Ayu Wanda Tika Wulandari in the Torneo Giraldilla women’s singles final in Cuba last March, also was sent back to her club.

For his part, Alrie held off filing a formal protest on the advice of his club in Bandung, Guna Dharma. “My coach told me to be patient and prove in the future that their decision was wrong,” he said.

He also said the PBSI needed to be better organized in player recruitment and sending junior players overseas.

Of the eight international tournaments in which he played, he said the PBSI only paid his expenses for one in Malaysia. He used his own money or borrowed from his parents for the rest.

PBSI camp gets Rp 3.5b swimming pool

JAKARTA: The national badminton training camp in Cipayung, east of Jakarta, now has a new Rp 3.5 billion (US$388,500) swimming pool.

The 13x40-meter pool was completed in June last year. A smaller 4x6-meter jacuzzi pool and a 4x8-meter changing room accompany the main pool, which is located adjascent to the entrance gate of the 3.7-hectare camp.

“We will continue to support the Indonesian Badminton Association [PBSI], as badminton is our country’s main sports. I heard that water therapy is important for maintaining the fitness of our shuttlers, thus we decided to fund the construction of this pool,” Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Andi Malarangeng said on Wednesday’s opening of the facility. The PBSI is also planning to build its own running track.

Yes, It's great idea... Nova is one of the best mixed doubles player before split up with Butet. And he is also one of the my favourite players

Badminton : House Says It Will Offer Olympic Sport

Despite the country’s struggles to make an impact at the highest level, badminton is still seen as Indonesia’s best hope for a gold medal at this year’s Olympics.

With that in mind, lawmakers in House of Representatives Commission X, which oversees sports affairs, pledged ample funding for the badminton team’s preparations ahead of the Games.

“Badminton should get special attention during the preparations, compared to other sports. If necessary, we can disburse lots of money because what is important to us is to regain Indonesia’s glory in badminton,” Zulfadli, a Golkar Party legislator, said on Wednesday at a hearing with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs.

Hadi Nasri, an Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) official, said he welcomed the support, adding, “we look forward to that being realized.”

It was agreed at the hearing that every effort must be made to maintain the country’s “golden tradition.” Indonesia has won at least one gold medal in badminton at every Olympics since the sport’s introduction in 1992.

Hadi said the PBSI would push its shuttlers to compete in as many tournaments as possible until the qualifying period ends in May. The top 16 singles shuttlers and top eight doubles pairs in the May 3 Badminton World Federation ranking qualify for the Olympics.

The PBSI reportedly has proposed a Rp 10 billion ($1.1 million) budget for its Olympic preparations. Youth and Sports Ministry secretary Djoko Pekik said on Monday that only Rp 200 billion was available for sports development this year, including the Olympics and the Asian Beach Games.

With the defeat to THA, INA's Uber Cup Team is almost certain not to qualify for this year's Finals in Wuhan.

There really needs to be a massive change in the coaching set-up and development of players in Pelatnas! Get rid of the dead-wood and once again....there's no pt recruiting so many players that end up rotting in the benches!!

I think the coach has lost his/her mind by putting a scratch pair against thailand.

Come on, against sri lanka, the coach put greysia, but then against thailand he puts lilyana(she has lost her touch in women's double i guess)

Djoko, from the armed forces. His tenure as PBSI head will end soon anyway. Early resignation won't matter much.

The problem is youth development during 1999-2009. Only last 2 years, it is starting to be better but mostly from the club first.

Fernando Kurniawan aka Edo has moved to Hong Kong and he will spar with HKG National team first ( Under Agus Hariyanto's club) for few months

Dandi Prabuta ( Ex Jones Janesen's partner) and Rizky Danu will move to Singapore and spar with SIN National team...there is a chance that Yoke may move to Germany and play the league there as well as Jones Jansen which will study in Germany for good

ooo my god...what happened with us???? those talented player moved....im hear that rizky susanto is no longer in Indonesia, but singapore now...he is also very talented player....poor indonesian that cant keep those talented young player like Jones, dandi and rizky....previously i think ill see jones as a world champ 3 or 4 years again...he just like LYD

I think it's a good move for Fernando Kurniawan. He's still young and if he's paired with the promising HKG youngsters like Angus Ng Ka Long, HKG may just have another good MD pair after the retirement of Yohan and Njoto.

That's the problem when talented players are too slow to shine. Especially when there are too many in one place. So when they need to move on either they become sparring partners or play for some countries. This is a sad thing for these players.
