Indonesian shuttler Eng Hian moves to Singapore

Indonesian men's doubles specialist Eng Hian has moved to Singapore to play and train badminton for the neighbor, his club said Wednesday.

Eng Hian, the bronze medalist in the 2004 Athens Olympics with partner Flandy Limpele, has left the respected Djarum Kudus badminton club for Singapore since early this month.

"Eng Hian surprised me when he said good bye. But any player has the right (to move) and we could not stand on his way," the club's chairman Supanji was quoted by the national Antara news agency.

The 30-year-old shuttler withdrew from the national training center in February last year and returned to the Central Java- based Djarum.

He and Flandy also have played for England in 2001-2003 and won several grand prix titles.

Well, what he brings is a ton of experience and can be beneficial to all the players in the Singapore team. A good move for him and Singapore badminton

Hey guys don't mess around. Loh seems innocent but even money says he's part of the committee which masterminded Eng Hian's move. Loh is a wizard and has his plans laid out for the greater grand scheme of things for the greater good of badminton in Singapore.

I assure you guys that I have nothing to do with it. I just pick it up from the news. But I'm glad that Eng Hian is willing to come over and help us and hopefully, as what Indra said, we could make some headway in 10 years!

hmmm, so eng hian and flandy have now played for 3 different countries?

i think their contribution will be more geared towards coaching and passing on their experience to the younger players in singapore, i don't know how well they can compete on the international scene anymore. does this mean they're also breaking up flandy and vita?

I thought only Eng Hian is coming not Flandy. So no question of Flandy breaking up with his hot partnership with Vita! Unless of course Flandy also has an offer from elsewhere.

I think Eng Hian can still play at a high level, considering contemporaries Candra and Tony themselves are not doing too badly, with such a high world ranking and possibly with the Beijing Olympics as their next target. As reported, even Candra has impressed PBSI so much that he might be recalled to the national team.

But Eng Hian's experience can certainly come in very useful as sparring partner at worst. I see quite a number of new Indonesian faces, apart from the Chinese, in the Singapore coaching panel and this might be one motivation for EH to join SBA.

We just have to wait and see what will transpire after this initial welcome.

I hope so but I won't bet on it.

Right now we see many of the high potential are the young ones who migrated across to Singapore for a better future. The initial drive to success is strong and I will not doubt some successes as well, but will these youngsters maintain their drive once they are settled in? You see life in Singapore can be too comfortable sometimes and there are many options available, that many tend to loose their focus very fast. Our advantage could also be our disadvantage.

I look around other sports who bring in foreign talents to boost the experience and level of playing, such as table-tennis, football, track and fields, swimmings. Not many sustainable success story actually.

I hope I am wrong about this on badminton.
