Hi all, I'm relatively new to badminton, only about a half year of playing time and to these forums. So during my games, my backhand is often picked on alot and I try to do the overhead smash to avoid it but when they do a low drive to it, I'm forced to use my backhand and then I get killed because I havn't perfected my backhand drops yet but my backhnads arn't strong enough to clear it.

Does the powerball actually work? I've heard of using the squash racket but does anybody have any first hand expirience with the powerball?

The powerball may aid in developing some power. However, you look at some players, who have skinny arms (no offence to them), who are able to do backhand clears and drives without much effort. Those are the people who practice their technique through repetition.

Learn the technique first (many threads here); get somebody to feed to shuttles to your backhand side while you do backhand clears and drops. That way you can get a feel of the shot and you'll be training up muscles you've probably never used before.

Once you have a good technique and can do relatively good clears to consistent level, thats when you should probabaly start thinking about which muscles to develop as you'll get a better understanding of which muscles are involved.

You've only been learning for half a year, so just take your time. If you rely too much on muscle/ power training, its possible you can develop bad habits the more you play, so get your technique down first and it'll make it easier in the long run.

For me, I was quite lucky as I had quite a natural backhand, so I developed it much quicker than some of the club players I play with.

    Hope that helps.

How much does a powerball cost? If you let me know, I'll try to come up with a more useful training tool of equal or lesser value.

Hey I want a Powerball too... but it's kinda pricey if I convert it to Malaysian Ringgit..

Anyway, is it good? Does it really strengthen your arm?

With 12$ you can get a foam roller. With that you can work out troubles spots (knots and such) from your major muscle groups -> an amazing tool for muscle tone, flexibility and recovery. In fact, it accomplishes a lot of the things stretching claims to do but delivers poorly on.

Ill give a thumbs up to the powerball, great for fore arm strength. Not to sure if thats the sorta strength your looking for im badminton, more weight lifting style, but it does help.

If ur looking for strength on your backhand as im sure has been said in this forum countless times, practicing the motion with an old squash racket really does wonders.
