    Default Injury after using a old squash racket with added weight

    During one of my training sessions on last sunday, i did a 45 minute shadow which involve a lot of smashing, smashing air of course, so i decided to use my friend's super heavy old type of squash racket with added weight. He placed metal wires and spin it through the holes of the racket between the strings basically making the top really heavy. Could be 2-3 kgs which is like 4-6 pounds. it was hard to swing at first but bared with it. Swinging it for just 5 times, its already really exhausting. After that, it my upper back (traps) started to hurt if not mistaken.

    On Monday, it started to hurt even more especially when eating when u have to raise your arm, this pain continue till today which is now ,thursday. I just want to ask has anyone experience this before? and ways to make it heal faster. And i would like to know what type of injury this is? i cant seem to find it in this forum. I already try hot compress and ice compress.I find it weird that it has to be that part which got injured but not my arm. My arm is totaly fine without even a slight muscle pain. My first assumption is this injury

    Is that the part of where back and shoulder joints? If so, you might pull a muscle due to the heavy racket. Sounds the injury is serious, and 1st thing is to consult with a doctor and go through a series of exams.

    2-3 kg is definitely too heavy. I heard advises given by coaches during intl. tourneys commentary to not train with a tennis racket or anything heavier than an average tennis racket. So regular squash rackets should be fine, but not with added weights and 2-3kg.

    Better see a GP first. If your GP thinks you need a specialist, go ahead ASAP.

    If you want to use a heavier racket, you have to strenghten your muscles in both arms,shoulders,wrists and back gradually. And then use added weights for your workout slowly before using heavy squash rackets. You can't just use a heavier squash racket just like that. Hope you will recover soon.

    thank you for your replies, Will definitely go see a doctor. Yes what was i thinking, will probably strengthen my shoulder or upper back (traps) after i recovered.

    It's probably your rotater cuff that's bruised or injured.

    Err just a simple suggestion,
    Do you work out much? I wonder whether its just a sore muscle feeling that youve never had before, the kind you get after a heavy weights session at the gym. This sorta ache also tends to come about the next day once muscle fibres have started to heal themselves, as you said in your post, from sunday- to it hurting on monday. But if you do work out you'll obviously know what that feels like and so scrap what I just said.

    I dont think so. Its definitely the upper back or traps. Its just below my neck at the right side, beside the spinal cord as in to the right of the spinal cord.Like normally when a person smash they would pull their arm really back like for example lindan when he smashes with the muscle at the upper back, I think that is how i got it by using a much too heavier racket, i guess i have learnt my lesson, If i m not mistaken rotator cuff is right beneath the deltoids muscle, rite? definitely not there.


    I have seen a doctor. She told me to rest , Gave me some Anti-inflammatory pills which i dont know if i should take. it comes will gastric pills cause it will cause gastric. She said could be a ligament strain or juz muscle strain, but it didnt get any better this few days, so i guess i need more rest and ice compress it.

    I have been playing badminton since i was like 6 years old and have been training for a long time intensively for years but this is the first time i had this type of injury. Usually injuries such as muscle strain recover within 3-4 days, or at least getting better each day but now since i had this injury, i dont see my injury getting better at all.

    I'm guessing it is probably the rotator cuff. When you swing hard, getting the racquet fast is only half the work. The other half is stopping the racquet after you hit the shot. It's important that the decelerators be as strong as the accelerators in a situation like this.

    One exercise that can be used to give some relief is soft tissue work with a tennis ball. First, pull your arm across your chest to reveal the meaty part of your back attached to the scapula (your shoulder blade). Place a tennis ball there and lean against a wall to put pressure on your muscles.

    What you want to do is roll the ball around until you find trigger points. When you find a tight spot that is very sensitive, hold and keep steady until the knot releases. Then move on to find more trigger points. This process can be somewhat painful, but in the end you'll feel very good.

    Yea, scapula that sounds really familiar. oh yea, in my medical cert. it says that, the doc wrote that, right scapula myositis.

    Thank you very much for that exercise, as it is at the back i cant seem to massage it myself . besides using my dad's massage chair.

    Er... you're not reading stumblingfeet's post right. Basically you find yourself a wall and lean against it with the tennis ball sandwiched between your back and the wall. If I could do it myself, so could you!

    I think you misinterpreted my post. I completely understand what he said. I was saying that that is like really helpful cause i cant seem to find anyway besides that method to massage my back, cause i cant reach it behind using my dad's massage chair. But thanks for clarifying.

    Rotator cuff injuries can cause referred pain in nearby areas. I have pain in my upper arm due to damage in my rotator cuff (I have the MRI to prove it).

    Well done for seeing a doctor: this is the right direction If possible, however, you should see a specialist in sports injuries. Ordinary doctors often just give you painkillers, which is not a sufficient long-term solution.
