Hi summer's now here and my son wants to play tennis.
Will this affect his badminton game ???

He's still just 14 but quite a high standard badminton player.
I've heard that it will help strengthen his arm, however I also heard that it will put him off his badminton strokes

Any advice, should I hide his tennis raquet :)

No dont worry too much about it. If anything its the other way round with badminton technique spoiling tennis technique. Although with todays lighter tennis racquets not as much as in the past.

In tennis one needs to keep the wrist firmer than you do in badminton, although there are shots where the player wraps the racquet around the ball to give topspin, usually a wristy cross court.

You may find also that he might strain his arm/elbow/wrist after the first few times of playing tennis until he gets used to the difference in technique. this will be due to overloading the muscles.

When he then comes back to badminton he may have some adjustments to make but nothing drastic.

unless he stops badminton completely, i don't think his skills would be adversely affected in any way

    Thanks

Thanks for the comments, I'll let him carry on. :D
He's still having badminton training 4 nights a week, so there hasn't been much impact.

He had wanted some tennis lessons & to do some local tournaments, but I actaully want a summer off from travelling all over. So it's a no to that

Potential downside is wrist and elbow injuries, trying to wrist flick a tennis ball that’s doing 80-100mph will hurt (a lot).

Guess he won't try it twice :crying:

I wasn't even going to let him play for fun, but I suppose that should be OK
He's so competative though, never just has fun !!

Sounds like he's a dedicated focused young individual which must be applauded. Varying the sports he does all the better in my opinion especially at a young age.

Let him have some variety - he's just experimenting.

I'll let him play just know what he's like. Wants to be the best.
Used compete in something else at a high level but the commitent, time & money was to much.

He can only play socaily anyway as still got plenty of badminton training to do, even off season. As I say just wants to be the best

Just wish I had some of his dedication !! :)
