There was a lot of questions about grip size and how to choose the right one. The answers were mainly like "choose the one which is comfortable for you" or "not too small and not too big". This is very confusing for beginners when they want to buy their first racquet.

If somebody know my threads he knows that I like researches (maybe because I'm a scientist ;)), so let's make a research about correlation between your grip size and the size of your hand! From tennis I know, there is a simple way to measure the hand size. It is presented in the picture below:

    (from http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/LC/Gripsize/Gripsize.html)

"With your hand open and fingers extended close together, align the ruler with the bottom lateral crease of your palm and measure to the tip of your ring finger."

If you express this measurement in inches you get the ideal grip size of tennis racquet.

Now I call you to tell your hand size and the circumference (in cm or inch) of your badminton grip (in the middle) for which you feel is the best for you.

My hand (from bottom lateral crease to the tip ring finger) = 113 mm = 4.45 inch
    Grip size (circumference) = 95 mm = 3.74 inch.

Of course, measure the grip size with your overgrip on if you use it...
I'm waiting for your data... :)

my grip circumference: 9,5 cm 3,7in
my hand size: 12,9 cm 5 in

    so, for me....no...

also, their method relies on the fact your hand fits exactly around your grip in a forhand, the fingertips barely touching the palm...
    Try a grip that big...It's hellish. For me it's a G3 with 4 overgrips!

also, anybody here that's grips up the cone (or even up the shaft...I do...)? that's not exactly 5in thick as well...

Thank you Jerby! You have huge hands since mine are not small at all. 95 mm? That's strange, because i also have G3 but 2 overgrips. One grip more on your racquete should be noticed...

Don't get it wrong. I wrote: If you express this measurement in inches you get the ideal grip size of tennis racquet. So that method is for tennis grip!

I will collect the data from you guys (if there will be any :() and will try to set the recommendation for badminton grip from the chart which will represent the correlation between hand size and grip size you use.

well, i do get a lot of feedback about me using a small gripsize for my hands...
and I switch a lot as well (towel, overgrip, thinner, thicker....)

Some people feel icky using a small gripsize, clinching it like mad..other people lose feeling of the bevels when thickening up the grip...

some people look weird at my grip all the time actually... I'll post a pic..

okay, here they come...I hope it's not too much off-topic...
Though the point I´m trying to make: gripsize is not just circumference. Grips can be squishhy, hard, round, cornery, but still all 3,5in in circumference...

the last picture, my grips a little loose, to show when I grip it...I don't use it too often though...and only in mens doubles, and only at the net... (and only when nót lifting)

I know that towel grips are different in this respect but when you make a stroke you squeeze the handle and the circumference should be similar.
And yes, I also have a grip on the cone but not so high as you... :) It really helps holding higher up the cone at net play when you need a touch.

doesn't that blow the "ideal circumference" right out the window?
I mean..my cone is even thinner than my grip:p

EDIT: this would be ideal..I'd still grip up the cone, just to mesh with people :D

    No it doesn't, because:
    1. cone is used rarely compared to the middle of the handle
    2. if you use griped cone as yours you can always find the ideal circumference (since the cone is thinner and thinner up the racquet) irrespective of grip size
    3. we can still find the ideal circumference for smash, clear and drive strokes as they are performed with the middle or end of the racquet
    4. Maybe word "ideal" is inappropriate, "prefered" or "suitable" grip size should be better, but I needed some provocation in the title :D

It was not meant as part of this thread because I just wanted focuse on grip/handle size (to help buying apropriate racquet - G2, G3, G4...). Characheristis like squishhy, hard, round, (ok not cornery)... are more depended on overgrip texture which is a personal choice after the purchase of the racquet... However, are handles really so different?

In tennis, I was taught that if you hold the racquet, and you can still fit a finger between the space between your last 3 fingers and the meaty part of your palm, then it's right. Not sure about badminton.

well, take a G3, take of the grip, and place an overgrip on the wood.
take a g5, and stick a replacementgrip on tje existing grip
take a G4, and stick to overgrips on it.

the could all be the same diameter...but entirely different..

not to mention the "doorknob" some people put at the end of their rackets (look at my buttcaps, bulging a lot more than normal) and some don't...I can't play with a thin grip without such a thing, It'd slipp...

What is supposed to be the right point to measure from? I got about 11 cm measured like this. I use Yonex G3 handle, stripped to wood and replaced either with one thin overgrip (Wilson X-Tra Tack) or towel grip.

Yes, that's correct measurement noticed from the picture. It seems like 11 cm and maybe one or two mm more. Now please measure also the circumeference of the handle you use with grips on.

this is true in tennis. as for badminton, you need the grip size to be loosey...
this will enable you to sprint the racquet as you grip tight while hitting the shuttlecock. a finger shall can be insert between palm and grip...
