Wee Kiong-Khe Wei to train with seniors ahead of world meet By RAJES PAUL PETALING JAYA: Reigning Asian junior mixed doubles champions Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei will begin their training with the seniors today. The duo will train under Rexy Mainaky to prepare for their maiden World Championships. Inspired by their first Asian junior title on Sunday, the 18-year-old Khe Wei wants to create at least one upset in the World Championships at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Aug 13-19. Wee Kiong-Khe Wei will be Malaysia's only mixed doubles pair in the world meet, thanks to a wild card from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). “It has been a great outing for us at the Asian Junior Championships. Our next assignment is the World Championships. We will be playing against the top players and we hope to beat at least one top pair,” said Khe Wei. Khe Wei added that she was glad to switch from singles to doubles just nine months after joining the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) in 2003. “I am happy the switch paid off and I have no regrets concentrating on the mixed doubles,” she added. Wee Kiong said their ultimate goal was to win at the World Junior Championships in Auckland in November. “The World Championships will be a great exposure for us. Our standard will improve by playing in the championships. Our aim is to end our junior career by winning the world junior title,” added Wee Kiong. Besides the mixed doubles crown, Wee Kiong-Khe Wei also helped Malaysia to win the mixed team title in the Asian Junior Championships.

Just heard that the World Junior Championships is without a host now. New Zealand has apparently withdrawn and the BWF is frantically searching for a new host.

(The Star, 30 Jul 2007) Joanne hopes to make the best out of her odd relationship PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's Joanne Quay is involved in a unique partnership with New Zealand's Daniel Shirley in the World Championships, which will be held at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Aug 13-19. The 27-year-old Joanne from the KLRC Bhd qualified for the mixed doubles with the Kiwi and she is looking forward to giving a good showing at home. Joanne and Shirley are one of the two pairs in the championships with players from different countries. The other pair are Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan in the men's doubles event. Both are Indonesians but Tony plays under the United States' banner. For the first time, Joanne and Shirley are able to come together for training way ahead of a tournament. The 28-year-old Shirley has been in the country for the last three weeks. “Usually, we meet during tournaments. Sometimes we train one or two days at the venue of a tournament. This has been our practice since we teamed up last year,” said Joanne. “It is great that we can train together for a longer time here. It gives us extra time to work on our partnership. I am determined to do well in front of the home crowd.” Joanne's and Shirley's first tournament together was the Hong Kong Open last September and they made it to the quarter-finals. They continue to show progress and are now ranked 20th in the world. “I was asked to try out the partnership with Shirley after his previous partner, Sara (Runesten-Petersen), decided to quit. We combined well and in less than a year, we qualified for the world meet,” said Joanne. Their most memorable outing was a stunning win over world number five Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark in first round of the Japan Open last year. Besides the mixed doubles, Joanne will also feature in the women's doubles, partnering Lim Pek Siah. Joanne's final phase of preparation for both the mixed doubles and women's doubles will involve matches against players in the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) fold.
