does any one believe its possible to make a shuttle from nylon that mimics feather close enough that it would replace them? I for one believe its possible but that it will never happen because of all the business created from the replacement of feather shuttles.
Some day, there will be a shuttle composed of a material not yet found. It will fly like any top feather bird. It is absolutely impossible to damage it. It also has the ability to sense the colour of the walls around the court and take the colour most easily seen by the human eye. When it is too dark it will glow. When there is draft, it will counteract it. I'm not saying when but it will happen =]
ahhhhhh....the power of imagination. i would not dismiss it. human did once say that we will never fly. look at us now, flying in all sorts of methods. the latest and i think most similar to true flight would be that sky diving suit that lets you glide in the air. human ingenuity always amazes me.
Hmm.. ..wow, don't forget when it is about to be mishit, it will have the ability to change its direction, thus saving the racket from total destruction..
That's the special NGP shuttle! It will be significantly pricier. I nearly forgot, the shuttle also extracts precipitation out of the air and humidifies itself accordingly.
and, it changes color to red when it is out of play. maybe the court have to have some microcip in it too. beats the hawk eye method. hehehehhe. no more use of controversial linesmen/women.....
I doubt the new-age plastic shuttles will be nylon.... funny thing, a player at my club is experimenting with metal shuttles (alloys and stuff)...Should be interesting
smokes, won't that be mighty heavy? i mean moving from feather to plastics is one thing, but moving to metal alloys?? this is i gotta see ... should really improve durability though!
yeah, I only heard of it in a 'a friend of mine' kind of way... though metals like magnesium are actually quite light... I'm more concerned about the shuttle cutting through strings (edges and stuff). But the basic idea is nice, the 'feather' should be as soggy as nylon, but more rigid and inducing flexibility on certain points is a piece of cake with metal... maybe graphite shuttle will be next
hmmmm, isn't magnesium the one that flares up upon contact with water? i reckon sweat would make the shuttle fly like a burning fireball, which would be cool though not very practical. keep us up to date on the progress of that metal shuttle if you hear anything!
Nope - it's potassium that fireballs when in contact with water (still remember how cool that was in chemistry classes!) Magnesium is stable in atmospheric conditions as it has a protective oxide layer. It does react when submerged in water, although only to the extent of forming bubbles rather than a fireball. back to the shuttle, besides cutting through strings, the other worry is for taking someone's eyes out! I think the graphite/carbon fibre shuttle could be plausible - these could form the core(vertical bit) of the individual feather - while the soft bits at the side would need to be made out of a softer material.
i still have doubts over the feasibility of this ... hahahaha .... it's all a bit 'iffy', let's see if someone proves me wrong.
well, it would certainly take time.... just like going from natural gut to nylon strings... Not everybody liked it at first, they felt dead and riggid. But cost-effectiveness and resistance to the elements amde it survive. with shuttles, if it's more durable and cost-effective, eventually we'll have almost no choice. but for now, plastic suck
