Well to jump into this, I've had chronic knee pain for about 4-5 years now, and i've always just ignored it cuz it wasn't tooo major.
But today I bought a patella strap support cuz i hate dealing with tape. I have to say, I'm wearing them right now, and I'm amazed at the results. I'd forgotten what being pain free in the knees felt like... and now I'm wondering why i never tried these before. They're kinda like the one's here

From the Lindan Pic its just General Athletic Support/strapping tape. Tube socks or presssure bandages as people have mentioned are used to control swelling and help with the healing of soft tissue damage.
Those who are having trouble with sensitive skin and strapping tape, there is either a sensitive skin tape or a protective layering tape which you apply to your skin underneath the actual strapping tape.
And unfortunately its hard to pinpoint the exact thing the players are using. There are thousands of different types and brands. It would be whatever the Chinese team physio/sports doctor has in his medical bag at the time.

That's a Kinesiology Tape, what its does is that the elasticity of the tape help take a small load off the muscle when stretched along the desired muscle. This gives the muscle more rest to recover quicker.
There are a lot of different brands for these tape, I found a instruction poster on one of it, take a look
