While everybody is speculating that TH, LD, LCW, BCL will be the likely contenders for the forthcoming WC men's singles crown in KL, don't write off Sony Dwi Kuncoro, who demolished compatriot TH 15-12, 15-5, almost 5 years ago at the Asian Badminton Championships in Bangkok's Nimibutr Gymnasium for his first major title and US$11,000 prize money. During that tournament Malaysia's Hafiz Hashim and LCW crashed out in the QF and R3 respectively. Unfortunately LD and BCL did not compete. Another surprise was when Zhou Mi outlasted Zhang Ning 6-11, 11-3, 11-8 for the WS title. So will upsets continue in the WC 2007? It will be interesting and I will not want to miss the action in KL!
yeah, LCW and LD were relative unknowns in 2002, since then they've really come of age. TH was already a very big name then, so yeah, it was a big scalp for Sony who managed to be him. but is it possible that TH was asked to concede the game so that Sony could earn some ranking points or something? i think this time around it'll be simon who'll cause a few upsets, i still haven't seen Sony perform to the level he's capable of.
Of course It's been a long time. Just to remind others not to discount Sony and expect some upsets. Didn't Sony take the bronze medal during the last Olympics when TH took gold? Was he given much of a chance then? And our Korean shuttler Shon even beat Chen Hong and eventually got the silver!
