Um... The "long thing in between the hand and the elbow" is called the forearm. Are you talking about sweat bands? Players use them to reduce the amount of sweat on their hands, so that they have a better hold on the racket.
Are you referring to the baller bands similar to the Lance Armstrong "Live Strong" yellow bands (bracelet)? If so, I wear mine as a reminder of a close family friend that died of cancer. Many others wear it probably for comfort or as a fashion statement. Cheers
