may i know the purpose of this?

    Im pretty sure that having those "sponges" served the same purpose as the U shaped grommets. This style was used before the u grommets came out.

    The U shaped gromments is the "MP" gromments. It serves the purpose to hold tension better, as well as stablize the sweet spot. ;)

    It was used to show the wealth of the players. In the old days, leather was considered to be expensive so having two small pieces of leather for your racquet was considered to be a show of wealth :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

    Seriously, it does nothing for the racquet pictured for the reason that those leather pieces were used to "cushion" the string for the old racquets (with external T-joint) so that the string doesn't get "cut" against the edge of the external T-joint.

    Hmmm okay when did the U shaped grommets were out in the market?

    What does the U shaped grommets do ??

    What LazyBuddy said. Retains tension longer and less stress to the strings.

    I believe Yonex first made public use of them with the MP series as said before in 2000. Possibly earlier from other badminton equipment brands.

    Normally I see those at the 12 o'clock position as a way to try to prevent high noon.

    it's to increase string life by decreasing string stress to the frame.
    I already try it. So far it seems true

    cut the grip to small pieces, everytime you put the grip on, always lastpart be cut, it's the cheapest way, off course the leather is usefull too
