I know this is banned but does anyone have a video of someone doing it? The whole forbidden notion entices me even more and makes me want to see this completely unpredictable tumbling serve
is this the same as the legendary "S" serve that was banned lolz, cause i never really knew what the "S" stood for...sidek serve makes much more sense...!
It was judged to give the server too great an advantage. Games (apparently) became rather one-sided, with receivers struggling to cope with the unpredictable, swerving, tumbling serve. The serve was banned indirectly, by introducing a new service law: the first contact with the shuttle must be on the cork, not the feathers, and not the cork and feathers together. The S-serve technique relied on a feathers-first or feathers-and-cork first contact. Or so I've read. I've never seen this serve demonstrated by a pro. I'd love to see videos from the matches where it caused such controversy. I can (unreliably) do a swerving serve using this technique, but I imagine the real S-serve is much more impressive.
For more info run a search on sidek serve or S serve. there's plenty of threads. but i think all the video links are dead. used a search engine but to no avail.......would be great if anyone could share a vid of a real pro-demoed S-serve!
For the nth time - I saw Tang Xinhu using the reverse spinning serve - what people call the Sidek serve - during in 1976 HK Invitational. It was then reported that he was already using it before then in China. Tang Xinhu also commented then how he developed the spinning serve - definitely have not learned from the Sideks. To me what is called the Sidek serve is exactly what Tang Xinhu performed back in 1976 in HK. Tang Xinfu then called the serve from Cantonese - 'shuan chuan' (spinning, circular motion) 'piao faat' (unpredictable, no pre-defined patch) 'fa kao' (serve, usually the 'fa' is omitted). If anybody wants to see how this serve is performed, best chance is either find a good player around that time (late 70s to early 80's) or find international doubles matches between 1978 to 1982. To Ceasar what belongs to Ceasar!!
no need to yell at me, please yell at kwun..... www.badmintoncentral.com/badminton-central/content/view/20/35/
my science teacher bowed down to this despicable move in a teacher tournament, funny thing is no one knew it was banned
Well, he can only blame himself for not making a patent for that serve ok so anyway, does anyone know a pro who does the S serve?
s serve There's one old man at xishan mon/thur that does this serve. I was surprise to see him doing this since seeing the good old sidek bro doing it. definitely difficult to tap. Was trying it out during 80s as well. Cool. I got a friend here who trains with the sideks during secondary school days in alam shah school. Former selangor state singles player. My uni colleague. Bloated now and playing golf. He can show you. Game at PUB club 8pm Wed. rgds
I can do it, but not consistenly - the hardest problem I have is getting it past the short serve line. it's so bloody hard to get enough oomph to get it in, yet keep it tumbling by the time it reaches the receiver. Really good at wrecking the shuttle too. Viver - I never knew when it was invented, but i always knew it to be invented by the chinese. by the time I started playing badminton seriously in 1982, it was already outlawed. (and at that time, we played with the carlton plastic birds)
I will try to ask him to show it to me when i see him. And i will bring my camera along to shoot it. If he allows hehehe.. Nothing better than the man himself doing it.
We may never know the original inventor. Maybe even the inventor was not aware of his invention. Tang Xianhu said he first saw the serve in an exhibition match with an amateur player. He noticed that the serve made the shuttle spin sometimes and sometimes not. After returning home he worked on the serve and developed a method to execute the serve. He introduced the variations into the shuttle's flight pattern which made it even more difficult for the receivers to attack it.
Dave, What was the name of the guy that preferred to preach to the fishes... Don't know why, but that feeling... :crying:
