    BAM to review coaches’ performance every six months

    KUALA LUMPUR: The performances of coaches in national teams will come under the microscope periodically.

    The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will have an appraisal system and a six-moth review on their performances will also involve chief coach Yap Kim Hock.

    The BAM general manager, Kenny Goh, said that this would strengthen the national coaching set-up and the council had given their approval to implement it.

    “Currently the reviews of the coaches are done when their contracts are near to an end. They are usually assessed by the performances of the players. We will now include other factors,” he said.

    Among the factors that will be taken into account are the relationships with players and other coaches in the national training centre; ability to command respect by executing their duties effectively; ability to think analytically; drafting effective training programmes; task orientated; ability to write concrete reports; and command good communication skills.

    “The coaches performances will be reviewed every six months and it will be documented. By doing this, we will have files to refer to when there is a need to look into their contracts,” said Kenny.

    He added that Kim Hock would be the first coach to come under the review.

    “We will have discussions on his role as the chief coach and on how he can add value to the national team. There is certainly room for improvement,” said Kenny.

    Kim Hock was appointed as chief coach in 2004 and he has a contract to run until the end of the Beijing Olympics in August.

    Kenny Goh said that this would strengthen the national coaching set-up.

    I wonder if our Malaysian coaches performances will be raised to a more desirable or more excellent quality after this media release.

    This is called performance evaluation, which almost all good organizations conduct periodically, from every month to once a year, depending on the positions and the need. To be effective it must be done professionally. It is an easy task to tell some one something good (say his performance is excellent) but many bosses don't do so well when they have to tell their charges of poor performance, choosing to blame some one "upstairs" when conveying the bad news to the one being evaluated.

    You are right.. It has been a trend for many multinational organization.. Evaluation through KPI (Key Performance Index).
    It a must.. However, the same must goes to each players individually.. No matter National Team, backup Squad, Juniors & those in BJSS as well..

    The question is : Who to conduct this evaluation?? Should not choose from any person inside BAM

    : A meeting among the elite badminton coaches yesterday to map out plans for the Beijing Olympic Games ended abruptly because of the lack of details in the programmes.

    And the coaches have been told that they are required to produce comprehensive programmes at next week's joint committee meeting between the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and the National Sports Council (NSC).

    Those who attended the meeting yesterday were chief coach Yap Kim Hock, men's singles coach Misbun Sidek, men's and mixed doubles coach Rexy Mainaky and women's doubles coach Cheah Soon Kit. The meeting was called off after the first two coaches, Misbun and Soon Kit, submitted their papers.

    The NSC's director of elite athletes, Ariffin Mohd Ghani, said: “The coaches did come with their plans but they were too general and not what we wanted.

    “For example, Misbun said that the plan was for (Lee) Chong Wei to win a gold medal but he did not state how to go about achieving it. Just stating the tournaments he (Chong Wei) will compete in is not enough.

    “We are looking at specific programmes for the players and not a general one for a group of players. We want the coaches to do it the same way as Rexy, who is clear on what is required and has given attention to all the pairs under his charge.

    “We have briefed all of them again on what we expect from them at the next meeting. If we get it right now, we will have a solid blue print of programmes for our future athletes.”

    Ariffin added that the national coaches would have to work together with Kim Hock, physical trainers Sean Sturgess (for doubles players) and Mohd Rosdi Abdul Ghani (singles) and the support team to strengthen their programmes.

    The BAM general manager, Kenny Goh, who also attended the meeting yesterday, said that he would meet the coaches individually to help draw up comprehensive programmes.

    “I will start to meet them from tomorrow. We will come out with concrete plans.”

    Default Hang on a minute here ...

    Wait , wait ...

    I am all for such big words KPI (Key Performance Index), Performance Review, Appraisal System, Stewardship, Scorecard etc etc. Yes, all of these you can find in the corporate environment.

    People, whilst we throw all these big words in the air, what about the leadership in BAM? The coaches cannot be held 100% accountable, right? For example, in a corporation like Sony, who do you think is ultimately accountable? Say for example, should Sony failed to hit their yearly profit target, do you think the responsibilty lies with the line Supervisors or the Chairman?

    In BAM's case, it is good to have such a tracking device for coaches. But lets not stop there, people. Performance Index should go start from the top all the way down i.e. from the Chairman down to the players.

    The Chairman & the board members in BAM must be stewarded, and the targets must be cascaded down to the coaches and then the players. If we want to create an result oriented environment, we may as well do it all the way.
