For the last month, after playing badminton intensively, the section right under the knee joint is sore. The tibia feels like its is tender or maybe its merely the muscle over it. i had a knee injury in which the patella shifted and popped back in place according to my doctor in which the tendon may have been slightly strained perhaps? All I know is that although the soreness goes away after a day, I would prefer to strengthen it to cause prevention of weakness in that area. Are there any muscle groups specific to that area of the knee beyond quads, hamstrings, calves, abductors and adductors which i am already doing for part of the rehabilition/strengthing regime my doctor is telling me to do? I will ask my doctor when I see him, but adding another excercise won't hurt, i now just need to know where that dratted muscle is :]

So your doctor didn't say it was patellar tendinitis? Because I got that injury over the summer and the exercises, believe it or not where quad strengthening, more specifically the vastus medialis. So basically my outer quads are stronger then my inner quads and that was pulling my knee out of place when i move it. So you might want to see you doctor again or physio to make sure thats the problem.

Also have you ever used tapping technics to prevent the injury? search patellar tendinitis tapping technics.

I'm not quite sure but don't adductor and abductor excercises help balance your quads? I do 110 on each so it's pretty balanced although my outer is slightly stronger by my physio said it was natural that outers are a bit stronger. supposedly hams and inners have 2/3 str of the quads and outers. I may be confusing myself on which muscle group you are talking about because I don't know much about the specific muscles in the quads.

    Clarifying my injury:
My injury was a partial ACL tear which did not require surgery and could play lightly after 2-3 months rest. It's been about 6 months now and I play regularly now but I've noticed that the top of the tibia area gets sore but is fine after a few hours. Just wondering if I could strenghthen that. The secondary part of my injury was that my knee cap popped out and then back in. Its in the right position but the bone or cartilege under the knee cap was rubbed and was tender for the first 2 months. Now it is fine but I was wondering if that has to do with the tenderness I am now experiencing at the top of the tibia after intense play.

The outer inner problem may have been the issue for the initial injury. I started doing abductors and adductors for rehab and my knee did infact feel like it was being pulled when i moved it back then. I did feel the tenderness when I first started learning badminton but it went away after a summer of conditioning. Will time heal it? along with my current calf/hams/quad/add/abd workout? or is there something i'm missing

I'll go look up tapping technics.

okay so this is different from what i personally experienced. I think your legs are well conditioned and probably in good shape. maybe you are over using your legs? maybe give you knee a break. try a anti-inflammatory to reduce inflammation under and around the knee. All I can suggest now is maybe take a break from your leg work-out, how often are you doing this workout?

For cartilage and ligament injuries, those parts don't regenerate: that means you SOL. Take your knee for a 3 T MRI scan and have a very experienced orthopedic surgeon to look at it.

I too have quad balance issue and my specialist prescribe eccentric drop squad: 20 reps/set for 3 sets. You should see a specialist first.

I'll ask about the eccentric drop squad(sp? squats?) next time I go. I have taken an MRI although I don't know which type but the orthopedic surgeon is going to be one of the on site doctors for the 08 olympics so he should be pretty good.

I just went for practice today with my coach and he said that it might be because of the brace itself. I have one of the max protection knee braces with hinges and the patella hole to keep it from moving and my coach said that when he had a similar injury the physio told him that he shouldn't wear the brace if possible because it causes tenderness in the tibia and pooling of blood. Is this true? I did play casually over the summer during vacation without braces and my knees felt great. In fact the soreness started after i came back to the US and wore braces.... although I did play more intensively after coming back.

My left knee has been injured before with a partial tear and I ihave never felt the tibia get sore... and I was using a soft brace with reinforced cloth instead of metal hinges, can anyone confirm that the brace might be the reason?

Also, if the brace is causing the soreness... what's the best course of action? ask the surgeon if i can remove the brace in favor of a softer on? or something else?

btw I thought ligaments could heal with angiogenesis(sp?) Although the healed ligament would have type 3 instead of type 1 or 2 material.... forgot the name, which is more brittle but nonetheless it would heal somewhat.

Edit = Angiogenesis is usually attributed to blood vessels but look at this article
