Hate him or love him, we can't deny the impact Li Yongbo has in badminton China or even the whole world. As a player, he was full of charisma and as a couch, he is full of controversy, just read the link below about his own confession about match fixing since 1999, article from Sina Sports in Chinese. The headline of this article : Li Yongbo : " I don't want to pretend, I fired the World Champion, ordered Yeh Zhouying to lose".

My translation - Sydney Olympic 2000

This is Li Yongbo's explanation on match fixing on the semi-final women's singles match between Ye Zhaoying and Gong Zhichao, and the selection of Ji Xinpeng over Chen Hong in Sydney Olympic 2000.

    ======================================================

    羽毛球队内部展开了慎重的讨论和谋划,1998年和1999年比赛的结果拿出来分析,叶钊颖输得多,龚智超基本没输过。马尔廷明显表露出不想打龚智超,因为龚智超的防守她无法突破,不好打。在中国羽毛球队的复兴路上,叶钊颖功不可没,获得过苏迪曼杯和尤伯杯等一系列世界冠军,近年始终是中国羽毛球的第一女单。
After our internal discussion, analysis based on results on 1998 and 1999, Gong Zhichao had a more impressive record than Ye Zhaoying against Camilla Martin. Camilla has stated that she did not want to play Gong because of her sold defense. Ye who has contributed to China's win in Sudirman Cup and Uber Cup, was still the first women's singles of China.

"I do not agree with the idea of match fixing because someone must get hurt and nobody likes to do that. But in China, country always comes first and we have finally made up the decision on the match between Ye and Gong, i.e. Ye to lose. If Gong won in the final against Camilla, Ye would have the same benefits of an Olympic champion had. At first Ye was crying but she finally respected the team and agreed to lose to Gong," Li explained.

Two games of 8-11 ended Ye's Sydney Olympic journey. But Gong was not aware of the story behind. "I has been a player before and I know the effort behind a champion has put in, nobody likes to be the one who has to lose," Li expressed his gratitude to Ye. As expected, Gong beat Camilla in the final and China won the 14th gold. Later, the women's doubles grabbed the top 3 positions.

The last gold was on the men's singles, Lee had no high hope on it. The best bet Xia Xuanze lost to Hendrawan in the semi-final. The finalist Ji Xinpeng was not even in the initial entry list. Chen Hong was the initial candidate besides Xia Xuanze and Sun Jun. "Sun's winning record against the top players was not impressive and neither is Xia's. But Ji has beaten all of them (top players) during the first half of the year. After the discussion, I called up Li Furong to request a change of the entry list. Ji was the replacement of Chen." Li's decision has finally been rewarded when Ji won the gold in the men's singles.

it is obvious lyb isn't hiding it. It isnt a deep dark secret either since lyb must of shared it with somebody before or else these rumors wont surfaced in the first place. As stated by lyb, it was what's best for the motherland. Ye didn't resisted and reward shared equally between gong and Ye. So all is good. China captured MS and WS gold says lyb had made some good calls.

This is not first time that China did match fixing........no surprise at all on this report.....I witnessed how Zhang ya wen/Xiong lost tamely with no attacks at all.....to He Han Bin/Yu Yang in XD Semifinal in DO ( just look at the score, each game below 15 points)......Badminton is not individual game. ...still team event...thats advantage for country who has many good players....

True. Once you control the whole battle field, you have more choices for sure.

However, before the battle (i.e. traning stage), all the nations have the same chance to establish a good successful program. However, most of the nations failed, or even corrupted the previous better ones. Therefore, they don't have the luxury of "have enough good ones". So, their situation regarding "match fixing" is not "i don't want to", but more like "i really can't".

The CHN athlete got recruit to the team when they were as young as 4-6 years old. The schools / teams pay for their school, training, living, etc. Once they got into higher level team, they even earn decent salary to support themselves or even family.

You only saw the champions, but do you know how much the program invest on the "never successful" ones? Do you know CHN national team have 200+ members? Over 90% of them, never win any medals, but still got everything for FREE since they were a little kid, and got paid for years.

The players fully understand their situation and duty, and they choose to stay. If they really want to quit, they can quit and hire their own coach, and participate the tourny at their own cost. However, very very few of them doing so.

To me, if you choose to stay in this organization, it's like signing a contract. You do what you get paid for. There's never a 1-side contract, as you always taking advantage, but never have to pay your duty.

    me wasting saliva?
    no......
using my time and some brain-thinking, fingers' energy to type some posts in BC only.........:D

    what can i say?
i do admire LYB as player previously and coach currently.
China = country = big boss = sole director
LYB = chief coach = CEO = staff
if my boss ask me to complete one task..... i will say no and tender my resignation letter in 3 minutes.....
however, i never been in the shoe of LYB, i have not much comment for anything........
he as a coach, do, did and done whatever he needs to be fulfill the task.
LYB as a player, do, did and done whatever tasks been given to him.....;)

Final score is not an accurate proof.

In WC2003, CM and Mia both received a 0:11 to ZN. So, maybe we should also try to discover something within the matches? Please don't tell me CM and Mia are 5 levels below ZN at that time, or any time.

Anyhow its still not fair to the players, even for those end up with the gold medal. Just ask Gong Zhi Chao. Not to say she doesnt deserve it, but she need to deal with all the controversy for the rest of her life.

Hmm, country glorious is the number one interest for communism/socialism ideology so no wonder CHN practise team order to reach best outcome. Sydney OG 2000 is the highest achievement thus far for LYB as headcoach when badminton contributed 4 golds.

Hm...may be I should not say the score then.....but It was obvious that HHB/YY was given by ZYW/Xiong.....if you were there and watched the game...it was so different and not ZYW/XZB's style....no attacks and just lob..lob..anyway...it was upping HHB/YY's ranking.....

Match fixing in badminton is still legal....it is not like Tennis where so many Bettings going on....match fixing in tennis can cause you trouble eventhough you do not mean it.....several cases happened in Tennis....in Badminton...it was hard..remember that at one point, INA enjoyed this priviledge also when INA still have Alan, Fung, Joko, Ardi, Hermawan, Hariyanto..I forgot another one ( being called Magnificent 7 or something)...INA has many players to choose and select which one to go...one player has been ordered to tire another player, etc so next one can defeat them easier....I wish INA has many talents like China....You can not blame LYB... he did what he was supposed to do the best for his country....

Actually match fixing from Li Yongbo continues to go on and among all, Yeh Zhouying is the biggest victim even though Li said Yeh would share all the benefits same as the Olympic champion. That's quite absurd as how can you share the honor without the name in the record book?
Li Yongbo said most of the players understand and have forgiven him which I am very doubtful about that. The only reason those players chose to mute is because Li is still in power and players even though have retired still remain active in badminton related field.
The fair question to ask Li Yongbo is, would he sacrifice for the country if his coaches order him to do the same during his prime? Only he knows the answer.
From achievement points of view, the strategy works, from ethics points of view, is cruel.
