Into The West - Annie Lennox

from the OST of Return of the King.

I actually wept while watching the white ship sail from the Grey Havens ...

I think it's more of the emotional impact of the scene rather than the song, especially if you understood what it means by 'grey ships sail into the West' as in the whole saga of Middle-Earth.

That's what movie studios trying to sell you in their products - scene, which can have a whole different sensing from song. Put together, we're emotional slaves in more ways. Hope we're not opening another can of worms here for crying

It doesn't make me cry but the song is quite sad.

Heard this just two weeks ago and I thought her own rendition was as good or even better than Sting's. Haunting, beautiful music, Eva sings. If Sting were a member on BC replying here he'll tell you that he wept listening to Eva's version of his song.

It's just unfortunate that she died too soon at the age of 33 with so much musical talent and voice.

One writer added that "...perhaps God wanted one of his angels back...".

I thought Peter Jackson visualised the parting scene at the Havens very well, pretty much similar to what I had in mind from reading the book.

The song itself described the bittersweet feeling in the hearts of both, especially the Elves as they had to say a sad goodbye to their old friends on their beloved Middle-Earth whilst looking forward to paradise across the sea and reuniting with their brethren.

The lyrics is a mixture of a tribute to a talented young filmmaker named Cameron Duncan who died from cancer and was performed for the first time during his funeral. It described death is but a temporary parting:

    Lay down,
    your sweet and weary head.
    Night is falling.
You have come to journey’s end

    Sleep now,and dream
of the ones who came before.
    They are calling,
    from across a distant shore.

    Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
    Soon you will see.
All of your fears will pass away.
    Safe in my arms,
    you’re only sleeping.
And allusions to the Undying Lands of Aman, Middle-Earth's paradise (not Heaven as Eru Illuvatar the All Creator doesn't live there):
    What can you see,
    on the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
    Across the sea,
    a pale moon rises.
    The ships have come,
    to carry you home.

    And all will turn,
    to silver glass.
    A light on the water.
    All souls pass.

    Hope fades,
    Into the world of night.
    Through shadows falling,
    Out of memory and time.
Aman was hidden from mortals (Man) and was deemed impossible to reach because it wasn't their fate due to the gift of Death.

    Sebelum Cahaya

by letto (i heard Letto is well known in malaysia and singapore )

    ku teringat hati
    yang bertabur mimpi
    kemana kau pergi cinta
    perjalanan sunyi
    engkau tempuh sendiri
    kuatkanlah hati cinta

    ingatkan engkau kepada
    embun pagi bersahaja
    yang menemanimu sebelum cahaya
    ingatkan engkau kepada
    angin yang berhembus mesra
    yang kan membelaimu cinta

    kekuatan hati yang berpegang janji
    genggamlah tanganku cinta
ku tak akan pergi meninggalkanmu sendiri
    temani hatimu cinta

    ingatkan engkau kepada
    embun pagi bersahaja
    yang menemanimu sebelum cahaya
    ingatkan engkau kepada
    angin yang berhembus mesra
    yang kan membelaimu cinta

    ku teringat hati
    yang bertabur mimpi
    kemana kau pergi cinta
    perjalanan sunyi
    engkau tempuh sendiri
    kuatkanlah hati cinta

    ingatkan engkau kepada
    embun pagi bersahaja
    yang menemanimu sebelum cahaya
    ingatkan engkau kepada
    angin yang berhembus mesra
    yang kan membelaimu cinta
