I was watching WC 2006 XD Final
    NathanRobertson GailEmms vs AnthonyClark DonnaKellogg

and I noticed that when Donna got a new shuttle(3-4 Robertson n Emms leading -game 1), she was rubbing the head of the shuttle against the strings before serving.

Then at 11-7, Robertson n Emms still leading, Robertson got a new shuttle and he also rub the head of the shuttle against the strings of his racket.

Just wondering if anyone has seen this behaviour and what is it for:confused:
Maybe only english players do that?

Robertson was actually called by the umpire for this on one occasion. I can half-understand why. On the one hand, everybody uses the same shuttle, so there would be no discernible advantage to the offending side.

However, it could be construed as "ball-tampering" (to borrow a cricket expression), and I suppose a rougher base would be friendlier to players who use a lot of cut shots...
