This is so sad, I used to see him eveytime i went back to Indonesia and played at PB Suryanaga ..Rest in Peace Om Nyoo....your dedication and courage to badminton will never be forgotten......

Njoo Kiem Bie, Berpulang Setengah Abad setelah Persembahkan Piala Thomas

Sakit Mengigau Bulu Tangkis, Meninggal Berjas PBSI
Legenda bulu tangkis Indonesia kelahiran Surabaya, Njoo Kiem Bie, meninggal dunia. Sampai setelah merayakan ultah ke-80, dia masih aktif melatih.
    LUCKY NUR HIDAYAT, Surabaya
Sebetulnya dia punya banyak jas.
"Semangatnya masih sangat menggebu-gebu kalau bicara bulu tangkis. Papa diserang sakit pembengkakan pembuluh darah sejak tiga tahun lalu.
Meninggalnya sang istri membuat kondisi Kiem Bie mulai menurun.
Namun, kepergian sang istri mengganggu konsentrasinya.
Semua orang Indonesia patut berbangga kepadanya," kata Hendrawan.
Selamat jalan Kiem Bie.

Njoo Kiem Bie, passed away half a century after presenting Thomas Cup

While falling ill halucinating about badminton, when passed away - dressed in PBSI suit

Indonesian badminton legend born in Surabaya, Njoo Kiem Bie, passed away. He was still actively coaching even after celebrating his 80th birthday. Even more to the extent he fell ill while coaching junior players on court.
    LUCKY NUR HIDAYAT, Surabaya.
The strange feeling came about 2 weekd ago. While undergoing medical treatment at RKZ Catholic hospital Surabaya, Kim Bie (affectionate name of a man called Koesbianto Setiadharma Atmaja) suddenly requested his family to prepare his favourite suit.
Actually, he got a lot of suits. But, he requested for a brown suit with PBSI (Persatuan Bulu Tangkis Seluruh Indonesia) logo attached on the left hand pocket of the suit. That same suit eventually accompanied the passing of 1958 Thomas Cup hero to meet God Almighty.

As a form of appreciation for his dedication and love for badminton in Indonesia, a racket was placed near his right thigh in his casket. That racket was the last racket he used while playing and coaching his trainees.
His deep grief family overshadowed the arrival of his body at room 28 Adi Jasa Wake, Demak, Surabaya, yesterday. Soon after, the body of man born 17th September 1927 which looked sturdy with high posture (183 cm) was then placed in a white casket.
His 2 daughters, Lucia Setiadharma Atmaja, 58, and Maria Setiadharma Atmaja, 56, witnessed the whole procession. "We highly respect him above all," said Lucia, the eldest, the daughter from the marriage of Kim Bie and the late Sisca Ling.
Lucia admitted impressed with his father who was still much spirited and concerned towards badminton in his dying days. Almost all his energy and mind was concentrated on badminton.
"His spirit was still enthusiastic when he talked about badminton. Daddy suffered swelling of blood vessels 3 years ago. But, he still wanted to be on badminton court," explained Lucia.

That spirit did not fade away even when Lucia's mother (Kim Bie's wife), Sisca Ling, struggled with breast cancer last year. Since his wife was hospitalised at RKZ, Kiem Bie always kept his wife company every morning and afternoon - juggling between his hectic coaching schedule.
Actually, added Lucia, Kiem Bie wanted to accompany his wife whole day at the hospital. However, his condition did not permit because of his hectic schedule in badminton. "Because of that, we convinced him that mum was going to be just fine," recalled Lucia.

When his wife was ill, Kiem Bie, a member of PB PBSI's expert council during the years 2006-2007, never failed to spur his wife to keep on fighting. However, her worsening condition told a different story. She passed away on 18 May 2007.
His wife passing caused his condition to decline. Without any doubt, the woman who had faithfully accompanied him was his sole source of life motivation.
While undergoing medical examinations, he was found to have a complication with symptons of liver hardening. But the disease did not affect his motivation to coach his trainees, age group category in Suryanaga Sports Hall and Kesehatan Sports hall at Ngagel Jaya, Surabaya.
But, his wife passing disturbed his concentration. "He always cried when he remembered Ms.Sisca. We have tried to console him, but it only made him happy about an hour. After that he was back grieving again," said Jacob Rusdianto, a former apprentice and colleague of Kiem Bie as a coach.
However, Jacob was also impressed with the high motivation of father of 4 grandchildren and 5 grand-grandchildren when he talked about badminton tournaments. He, for instance, still took time to watch several tournaments, including the ones held on outside town. he lastly accompanied PB Suryanaga at the finals of men's category of Indonesian Badminton Super League on 1 July 2007 in Jakarta.
Ultimately, during October 2007, a month after celebrating his 80th birthday, Kiem Bie fell down while coaching his trainees at Kesehatan Sports Hall Surabaya. "At that time, we actually had not permitted him to continue coaching," said he.

But, Kiem Bie in fact did not run out of idea. He asked to go and reasoned that he only wanted to see his trainees. "At last he admitted fall down while coaching his trainees on stroke movement. Because of that fall, he lost 2 teeth. His red blood cells counts also dropped drastically," said Lucia.

Doctor immediately decided to carry out blood transfusion that required 7 blood packs. After that, Kiem Bie always went in and out of hospital. He was eventually pronounced dead at RKZ, Surabaya, Monday (7 Jan 2008) at 2345 hrs. According to planned schedule, his body would be buried on Saturday (12 Jan 2008) at 0900 hrs (Western Indonesian Time) at Eka Praya Burial ground, Kembang Kuning, Surabaya.

Just like her eldest sister, Maria - Lucia's sister - also admitted highly idolised Kiem Bie's personality. Regardless of his stern character, he always held on to the principle of responsibility towards family.

When he was still hospitalised at RKZ, Kiem Bie always requested many many times for the doctor to let him go home. He even stated that he wanted to acommpany East Java contigency to play in PON XVII at East Kalimantan in the coming July. "when he was ill, he always hallucinated about badminton. There were several times he mentioned the name of his trainees with some instructions," said he while trying to hold back tears.

It was a pity that Kiem Bie's talents in the world of badminton was not inherited to his children, because he was very democratic. "Daddy never forced us to play badminton," said Maria.
Jacob Rusdianto, PB PBSI's chief of organisation and local development sector, said Kiem Bie was always proud if Red White flag flew high and Indonesia Raya anthem was sung. Together with his partner, Tan King Gwan, Kiem Bie was one of key players who won Thomas Cup for the first time for Indonesia in 1958. The success was repeated when Indonesia retained Thomas Cup in 1961.

He also won Malaysia Open (1959-1963) and Indonesia Open (1959-1963) during those times when the number of tournaments were scarce unlike today. As a coach, he was also successful in moulding world champions, All England, Thomas & Uber Cup champions, like Mulyadi, Minarti Timur, Rudi Hartono, Alan Budikusuma, Lilik Sudarwati, and Sony Dwi Kuncoro.
According to Jacob, every player who was coached by Kiem Bie was impressed with his level of discipline. One of the memory well remembered was Kiem Bie always came half an hour before training commenced. "Only one of his obsession left unfulfilled. He always wanted Thomas Cup and Uber Cup to return to Indonesia," said he.

Reverend Hendrawan said yesterday at the funeral service that the passing of Kiem Bie almost coincided with 50 years after presenting Thomas Cup - was a way towards perfectness. According to hendrawan, Kiem Bie was an extraordinary man. He was a hero for his family and people of Indonesia. A hero that made Indonesia appreciated in the eyes of international world when bringing home Thomas Cup for the first time for Indonesia.

"Even so, he never asked for any form of respect or appreciation. Every Indonesian should be proud of him," said hendrawan. One day, when Kiem Bie's condition was critical, Hendrawan asked him whether he was ready to meet Lord Jesus one day. At that time Kiem Bie answered yes. "This was the best way. He was finally released from physical sufferings and all things that bound him. We must let him go in peace," revealed Hendrawan. Good bye, Kiem Bie. May one day Thomas and Uber Cup return once again to Indonesia just like what you have dreamt.
