i think i want to change my view about backman. i think, in a way, the backman also setups the frontman. A good backman knows when to smash, when to drop, who to smash, where to smash, how hard to smash, how flat to smash and etc.

I think Lundgard is very good at this. Eventhough he does not have the most powerful or fanciful smash, his smash often forces weak return and this setups JE with those killing chances.

i recomend candra wijaya for the backman
he do smash all the time
if he get 19 chance of smash >>he will surely do it for 20 smash

candra n tony was good pair.they completed ,fill, serve each other

Hendra Setiawan is a good 'FrontMan' but not the best. Recent performance that brought much attention to him I believe is due to be his overall court performance and increased potency from the back.

I can't understand why is Park Joo Bong on the Poll List. Kim Moon Soo's a Real Forgoten Front Man hero of the pair. Prolly everyone remembers it as 2 Park Joo Bongs playing together winning all those titles.

Default Gretest Front Player of all time

    Dear all,

Interesting topic for discussion...fyi, in recent years, after reading the comments from past greats like Rudy Hartono, Christian Hadinata, Han Jian, Liem Swie King, Razif Sidek, Jalani Sidek and even Kim Dong Moon himself...... they all regard Park Joo Bong as the greatest ever. I know most of you may not agree, but i think the past greats have a point there.....just my two cents worth.

    Enjoy the discussion.

    Cheers all,
    Richard

Cai Yun ahead of Park JB, Li Yongbo, Sigit and Rexy.

    Says a lot, doesn't it?

If I'm not wrong, there's no 'front-back' in that partnership as they were really good in both? Either way, they were the greatest IMO.

Perhaps someone might have the interest to open a 'Best backman in Men's Doubles' with the mods helping with a poll as well???

I'm sure it will be a great hit

First, let the names flow (in another thread, of course).
And then we could look at a poll

The Poll forgot to add Kim Dong Moon to the list. He's as good as Tony setting up for his partner. Ha Tai Kwon gets to put his powerful smash to good effect thanks to Kim's setups.

You must be kidding! Isn't KMS more "back-court"? Remember, even when PJB partnered with KDM in 1996, it's KDM who did all the dirty "smashing" work. Just watch the 1996 Thomas cup match between Park/Kim and Antonius/Kantono, you can see how lethal Park is at the net!

Btw, I think Tian Bingyi is more the "front man" in the Li/Tian pair. Look at their physique. Tian looks like Setiawan and Li looks like Kido. It's pretty clear who is the smasher, right?

I think it reveals more about the ages of the voters than technique levels between these players.

..not to see KKK leading the poll, considering the many M'sians and KKK fans mingling around in BC..

Park Joo Bong is a frontman, no question, but a very different frontman .....

What marks him out from the rest is that he can be very good doing anything, front court, back court, attack and defence. Even if Tian Bingyi/Li Yongbo had the better attack and Sidek brothers better defence. PJB remains the only front court guy that can win XD World Title, which shows how well he can adapt to backcourt conditions.

Current players are only really good in front or at the back, not both, and that includes legends like Rexy (back) and Tony (front).

In this respect Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng now probably has a better frontcourt/backcourt balance than Koo/Tan and Kido/Setiawan.
