If southern as in Barrhaven area, then there are 2 community centers/public gym you can goto:
walter baker center - fridays 8pm-10:30pm and sundays 9am-12pm - $2.70 per session
nepean sportsplex - sundays 8am-11:40am - havent' been here in a while, but around the same cos as walter baker
clubs - goto the site above (place to play), look for manotick, laurentian, bell.

If you are fairly comfortable with intermediate to advanced play, I would suggest Westboro or Laurentian. If you're looking for higher level of play or you want to play alot, you may want to consider the RA center which you can get 16months membership for the price of 12.

Here's a link to places to play:
http://www.badmintonottawa.com/WhereToPlay.php
Any places I refer below is listed in the link above.
As clubs will be closed at end of May, you can go to the Capital-Summer club or the RA Center. Not sure if you are here yet, but if you want to play now, the closest ones to you are Capital, Westboro, Hintenberg, and Swallow.
2 other places that are open all year long is Nepean Sportsplex and Walter-Baker Center (Jockvale). Sportsplex open Sunday 8am to 11:40am (limit 32 people - 4 courts) and Jockvale opens Friday nites at 8pm-10:30pm (very busy, not recommended) or Sundays 9am to 12 pm. These 2 places are not in the link below, just fo a search on google or ottawa.ca and you'll find addresses for them.

i'm not sure about the SBA affiliated ones, because like capital, they begin registration for a number of weeks (say all of summer or something like that), and usually people register real early. but i'm sure you still have a chance. i'm a member of Hintonburg Badminton Club, and as of right now, friday is the busiest night, due to the amount of high school players getting ready for the cities. sunday is your best bet, at 1:30pm-4:30pm. any other info, you can find at that site.
