What are the things that amaze you?

It can be quite a lot of things:
    - something as deceptive as a Hendrawan drop,
    - something as awe-inspiring as the Hagia Sofia,
    - something as quixotic as a Bush-ism,
    - something as magical as a child's laugh,
    - something as heart-stopping as a missed penalty,
    - something as colourful as a chehsi or Cheung pic,
    - something as extraordinary as Taufik Hidayat's backhand smash,
    - something as nostalgic as a wooden racquet,
    - something as optimistic as a koo_fan post,
    - something as nasty as a pretend foul,
    - something as brazen as a biased line-judge,
    - something as irrelevant as this new thread :p

    - or even something as moving as a Celtic Woman song :)

    So, what amazes you?

    Do newborn babies count?

I've seen many of them - the telly, friends' children, nephews and nieces etc. They're still quite amazing - where and how did they come to be? Ok, I know the answer to that question (don't we all? :p) but the thing is 'life', the creation of life, in that little bundle of flesh.

I still go, "That thing (as an expression) is alive. It's got a body like mine although presently smaller and wrinkly :p, blinking eyes like mine, yawns like me, smiles and reacts to things, like me. Inside that little body is a life!".

And no, this is not my inner fatherhood surfacing - I'm not ready!

In my job, from time to time, I get to help mom's deliver babes. And you are absolutely right, they are just the neatest, most ridiculous things.
Don't worry about being prepared for fatherhood. Apart from choosing the right partner, there is no better preparation than what you just described yourself having...wonder and love.

OK, just some random amazing songs and the performers:

Kristin Chenoweth singing "Girl in 14G":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBJn4BHtqqY&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=53

Beatbox of "Coming in the air tonight":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUX9ffXdPYk&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=45

Jimmy Harnen, "Where are you now?". I love this long forgotten song:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Jpt9fsjdNY&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=44

Lea Salonga, "Can you read my mind" (Live). Lea has one of the sweetest voices ever and it's perfect in this song. I've heard quite a few say, you cannot truly appreciate Lea's voice until you hear her sing live, that it's awe-inspiring.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAxaKNNscZI&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=36

American the beautiful by none other than Ray Charles. Nobody did this song better:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7Wt4XlXUrc&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=20

"True" by Spandau Ballet. An 80s classic, certain to be an all-time classic (if not already). So many songs but this is my favorite. Why? I don't know, it just is:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYb83KM4at4&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=15

Bianca Ryan, the first time singing on America's Got Talent, "And I'm telling you I'm not going." When I saw Bianca come out, I was like, "Oh boy...next." Then when she started to belt out those notes, I cried. I could not believe an 11-year old could sing like that:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozDh4NQveJs&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=11

Connie Talbot, amazing 6 year old, "Somewhere over the rainbow":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWNoiVrJDsE&feature=related

"Do they know it's Christmas time":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jEnTSQStGE&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=10

    "We are the world":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmxT21uFRwM&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=9

Make Your Mamma Proud (MYMP) a Filipino Group singing "Especially For You":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf2kClO8cro&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=8

Yvonne Caterfeld, "Volare". Great voice and easy on eyes;):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL1NNZBE1WA&feature=PlayList&p=D8BF9C16E01CFB7C&index=4

A little Les Mis, "Do you hear the people sing?" 17 Valjeans!. One of the greatest songs of our time:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdQpQgYHc4w

Lara Fabian, "Adagio". Lara's another one of the best of our time. If you don't know the song, it's "starts" at: 3:32 ;):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owBtE_YlqSA

Another Lara, "Caruso". She's just too good:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hg3DNNrH1M&feature=PlayList&p=FFB8D07896477EEA&index=1

If "True" is my favorite song, then "Biggest part of me" by Ambrosia is a close second. I just love David Pack's voice, so unique, so cool. Even Kurt Vonnegut wrote to Ambrosia saying, "I envy you guys":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QIWtY7gzvA&feature=PlayList&p=F7788AFE8BB05D07&index=0

Russell Watson, my favorite rendition of "Volare", so playful, yet suave:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwnSj9jRiWM&feature=PlayList&p=E67C331925CC7A29&index=0

Russell Watson, my favorite rendition of "Nella Fantasia". While not be the best, he's got this "class" I can't quite describe. Almost James Bondish. Maybe it's the arrangement, love the full orchestra and choir ensemble accent perfectly:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaHa_9d2y5s&feature=PlayList&p=E67C331925CC7A29&index=1

"I'll be over you" by Toto has to be another one of my top songs:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u1u3Q-G5xI&feature=PlayList&p=67BBE26EA536DCC0&index=0

Lastly, some Wang Lee Hom, just good romantic music:

Thanks for those songs! I'll check them out. One song which is timeless from my point of view is the song "Sweet Love" by Anita Baker.

Newborn babies! Amazingly emotional experience. I've been involved in so many (not my own:)) and it's still good.

haha, I've just been watching Spandau Ballet songs on youtube. Surely brings back those New Romantics memories! I got to say "Through the Barricades" is a real classic. Back in those days, vinyl records came in 7inch and 12 inch versions of the single. The 12 inch version of "Through the Barricades" has an extended intro section with the guitar which was marvelous. I haven't heard that particular version for more than 20 years now. Does anybody know how/where I could hear it again?

    Edit
Oh wow, Wouldn't it be good to go back to the 80's:) I think the lyrics of this song are still apt today.

    Amazingly Pathetic!

What amazes me is that, even after a decade on the professional circuit, Kenneth Jonassen still hasn't learned how to serve :(

(For awfully clear lessons on how NOT to serve, watch Jonassen's match against Andrew Smith in the 2008 European Team Championship.)

Comments made in the Year 1955!

...most, if not all, of them sound so prophetic... [IMG]

Comments Made in the Year 1955!
    That's only 53 years ago

'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.00.'

'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2,000.00 will only buy a used one.'

'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.'

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?'

'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.'

'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.'

'Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.'

'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL of DAMN in it.'

'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .'

'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.'

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.'

'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.'

'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.'

'Marriage doesn't mean a thing any more, those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.'

'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.'

'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.'

'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.'

'There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.'

'No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.'

'If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.'

    Transparent Spam

Take a look at this address copied from a spammer-created thread that I deleted a minute ago.

    (name removed) COMPANY,UK
    (Address removed),
    Prenton Merseyside.
    ZIP CODE:CH43 0TJ.
    CONUTRY:ENLAND.:D:D
    TEL:44 704 (removed).
    FAX:44 704 (removed).

Forget the 'conutry' and the 'enland'... the phone number is a dead giveaway.

It's quite well-known that the 44-704 prefix is a Nigerian call re-routing operation. (These are also the generous Nigerians waiting to fill your bank accounts with either millions of dollars or hundreds of gold ingots :D)

What amazes me is that people still fall for such 'transparent' scams that promise goodies like a 'new' iPhone or an iPod for 30 dollars :D

What amazes me even more is that the British Government allows this kind of misuse of its telephone system

    --------------------------
    Here's some useful info:

Scam phone numbers in the United Kingdom (+44):

Most "419" scams (click here is you don't know what a 419 scam is) using +44 70xx numbers involve emails that are sent from Nigeria and other West African countries, not from the UK! If you see a +44 70xx number in a 419 scam email it usually means you're dealing with criminals based in Nigeria.

UK phone numbers starting with '70' are "Personal numbering" in the "Find me anywhere" range. Charges for calls to these numbers are not distance-dependent. They can cost as much as UKL 0.50 (USD 0.90) per minute to call and can forward the call to virtually any phone number in the world. Forwarding numbers can be set up for free and completely anonymously via websites such as uknumbers.com.

In most cases when you call one of these numbers the phone that starts ringing will actually be a mobile phone somewhere in Nigeria, as the UK number has been programmed to auto-forward calls to another number. These +44 70xx numbers are used as a redirector service to obscure the fact that the person taking the call is not actually based in Europe. The UK number is used to lend credibility to the scam.
