Tan Fook to wed ex-China shuttler Jiewen
GUANGZHOU (China): Veteran doubles badminton player Choong Tan Fook is tying the knot with long-time girlfriend Zhang Jiewen of China.
The former top Malaysian men’s doubles shuttler has been staying in Guangzhou with Jiewen and her family and will be heading back to Malaysia next month to register their marriage.
“We will not move back to Malaysia. I think it is better to stay in Guangzhou as she needs to be close to her parents,” he said during the just-concluded China Badminton League (CBL) held here.
Tan Fook, who was a losing quarter-finalist with Lee Wan Wah in the 2004 Athens Olympics, said after marrying Jiewen he plans to buy a house and settle down in Guangzhou.
However, he said they had no immediate plans yet to hold a wedding reception.
Tan Fook replaced compatriot Lee Chong Wei in the Guangzhou Yueyu team as the latter failed to get the BA of Malaysia’s (BAM) permission to take part in the CBL.
The 33-year-old teamed up with Yu Yang in the mixed doubles and Gan Shaolong in the men’s doubles to help Guangzhou Yueyu finish among the top eight in the league.
Jiewen, a former world women’s doubles champion, partnered Yu Yang.
However, the couple said they would probably not take part in the new league season which is scheduled to start in May.

Congratulations to the lovely couple. Guangzhou is a much better place to live in as compared to Msia.
