toys are usually rigid and have limited configurations. toys that are complex little kids do not understand.

however, water, sand, mud have infinitely different shape and sizes, changing every moment in time esp for water. i personally am always facinated by the infinite shapes and form of wave hitting the seashore. i think kids too find it the same.

You need to behave and beg your parents for toys. You need to put it back in order, otherwise endless screaming will come right in. You don't need to do anything for the nature, well, once head/hand/new clothes all covered in mud, that's another story. :p

being grownups sometimes sucks. if we were kids, we wouldn't think twice about getting down and dirty in the mud, playing in the rain, catching fish in a drain etc etc..i guess toys come with a way of playing it. there is some boundaries, like kwun mentioned, even though some kids with highly developed imagination can turn a toy into something else altogether. :D i think kids loves textures and smell and stuff and earth, mud, rain, ocean, all offers a variety of textures and smell. :)
