Also.....
You can also flick the shuttle up by "brushing" the racket along the feathers away from the cork.
This causes the feathers to act like a spring and bounce off the court, allowing you to catch the bird on your racquet as it rises!
You have to be careful though, cause if you press too hard you, knacker the shuttle. This aside I think it looks more impressive than the standard scoop as it looks like the shuttle "jumps" onto your racquet!

hmmm i learned to scoop a bird when I was 13, just took a few hours of practice on my hardwood floors at home

If your racket is getting scraped on the side while scooping the shuttlecock form the floor does that mean you are doing it wrong?

this sounds ridiculous, but i learned how to scoop the shuttle from the floor, then i learned how to scoop the shuttle mid-air, before i even learned the rules of badminton.. :O

Here is a brief video tutorial. It's kind of short but you'll get the idea of how to do it properly by seeing it in slow motion. It also teaches you another trick of scooping the bird off the floor reversely. Hope this helps.

Here is a Youtube video of picking the shuttle from the floor with your fingers (also the backhand method).
* Important technique: notice the position and direction of the racket/rim next to the shuttle before the U motion begins.

There is another more advanced method of picking up the shuttle:
tapping the feathers to pick up the birdie
