Park Sung Hwan - Giant Killer !!

This chap is really something and there's not one post about him !

People are not giving credit where it is due !! when he beat Lin Dan everyone thought it was a fluke and wrote nothing about him.

Then when he beat Hashim, what was written about him on this site ? nothing.

And today he beats Kenneth Jonassen, again not a mention at all. Please give this man credit.

I am a big Lin Dan and was shocked as anyone to see LD lose..... but it just goes to show that it wasn't a fluke ! and it really takes someone at the top of their form and game to beat LD on the day.

I just hope he goes all the way and wins the men's single ! I don't know who he will play tomorrow but I will be rooting for the Giant Killer ! as the say....

Yes, PSH is the man of this tournament. And he is probably the only man holding a better head to head record against LD.

I think PSH is the next rising star beside CJ.

Go Park! Get your first major title and beat all the big names!

The true test for Park comes tonight as his style of play has no advantage over Bao. Park is an excellent defender able to return most of the assaults from Lin Dan and force Lin Dan to make lots of errors. I think Park has yet to reach his peak in terms of skill, there are still lots of room to improve in his attacking scheme. So when Park plays against Bao, who has excellent touch and veriaties of strokes, will not be easy. Park can expect to run all over the court so the rubber set in QF may become a key factor.

I agree with you all. Park plays very well, he has been improving so much.
Last week, in 2007 "China Mobile Cup"Badminton Invitational Championships, he was the only KOR player who won the match in the Final against CHN, beat Bao Chunlai in straight set 21-16,21-18 (though he lost to LCW before, when KOR won over MAS 3-1, but it was in rubber set, 21-15, 6-21, 18-21).

In this CO, en route to the semis, he beat
    Lin Dan 19-21 22-20 21-17
    Hafiz Hashim 18-21 21-13 21-17
    Kenneth Jonassen 21-14 19-21 21-16.

    Excellent !!!

Though all the matches were very thight, all in rubber, but in other way we can see that he has a GREAT stamina. Just wondering he still has enough power to beat Bao (who has advantage with the W/O). But if he win over Bao tonight, I doubt that he can beat the "unbeatable" LCW in the final.

    Let's see...

You're making a huge assumption that Chong Wei will win today. Chen Jin is playing really well and don't ever under-estimate the influence of line judges to the outcome of the match in any sports. Anyway, is part of the home court advantage as Gao Ling stated the best about this issue :" if Olympic happen tomorrow in Peking and the same thing happen, are they going to walk off the court too?" and she laughed.

He is a real fighter & i don't think his excellent stamina will come to an end in SF... If it was dragged into 3 sets, PSH will hold an upper advantage over BAO, who is not really physically fit for most of the games (even though he doesn't need to play in QF )

That's simply because of LCW recent performance, so I predicted so. But you are just right, LCW is still a human, too. He may lose, too. Now, let's hope who deserve to win will win :).

If I am not forgotton, my Korean's friend told me years ago that the main two surname in Korea are PARK and KIM. If it's true, that's why we often hear Korean's players with surname Park (e.g. PARK Joo Bong) and Kim (e.g. KIM Moon Soo). Of couse, beside those two, there are LEE, HA, etc.

This is all true. Park is the 3rd most common family name after Kim and "Lee" (which actually has no "L" when pronounced in South Korea). Park Chung-hee is the ex-"president" you mention.

Oddly, three other "athletes" named Park are far more famous here than the two badminton Parks you mention: the pitcher named Park Chan-ho and the golfers Se Ri Pak (just a difference in romanization) and Grace Park. Still, you did say in "sports" so omitting golfers and baseball players is logical.

Incidentally, the name of today's semi-finalist is Park Sung Hwan not Park Sun Hwan.
