A number of the folks here played in Richmond. I play at the Richmond Badminton Club (they use the Anderson school gym) on Tuesday evenings.

I've tried the church at the foot of No. 3 Rd. (two courts, lower ceiling). There are a number of places to play in Richmond including most of the community centres like Cambie, South Arm, Thompson, West Richmond, Steveston, etc.

I believed that a number of the churches here also have their own gyms.

Well, the RCB is actually a social club that was formed years ago. They used to played out at the RCA Forum by the airport. The club is a non-profit organization and is open to adults only. They play every Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday evenings out at Anderson school gym (Albert/Garden City).

The annual fee is CAD$75 for a single evening of play and CAD$150 for two evenings of play throughout the year. The sessions runs throughout the school year and closed for the summer. The fee includes feather shuttles (currently using Victor Champion and Sosan Black). Drop-in fee is CAD$5.00 per session and drop-ins are restricted if there are too many regular members (currently the limit is 22 players - there are three courts).

The level of play varies although the Sunday sessions are more for the advanced players. Singles play are restricted towards the end of the evening when there are free courts available. You sign up (in blue for men; in red for ladies) on the next available slot and wait your turn for the first available court. *The colours are so that you can tell whether you will be playing mixed or not. For example, if there are three red names in the next available group, you can skip (if you are male) and put your name in the next group thus, allowing the ladies an opportunity to play women doubles. The group of four players are then paired more or less evenly for a good match although there are players who like to win (regardless) ;)

Last couple of weeks, we had a couple of drop-ins who were quite good. One was a 27 year old who used to train with the Malaysian National team; another was a high school coach who is currently doing his undergraduate studies.

Who to Look For in Richmond?

I remember there is a young lad by the name of Eric Yan (spelling?) who had spent one year of training in Malaysia. The guy is incredible! I swear he is on par or at a higher level than the top folks in VRC. Cheung, if you happen to drop by Vancouver the next time, look for Eric at UBC or Richmond's Cambie Community Centre.

I think RBC should be put out to the youths too! Badminton is thriving in Richmond among teens. Many of us can only play at local community centre drop-ins or travel far to clubs like VRC. I realize that there are not many courts at Anderson school, but perhaps you can expand your club? It would give teens in Richmond a club to call their own as well as a place to play and compete against good competition! Give VRC a run! LOL:)

Yes! I know it will be impossible to get any sort of facility for badminton as there is not enough funding from the government. Especially if we have the Winter Olympics in 2010! But perhaps get a bigger gym and start a club?
Personally, I am rather lucky as I attend Cambie Secondary and there is badminton almost everyday. Yet, I like to play a variety of people! Someone start something!

You need to get together with your buddies first before heading out to VRC.

VLT is very nice at a steep price. Shower gel, towels and amenities included.

That's the price you pay for playing at a better facility with dedicated badminton courts and a lack of air conditioning drafts.

RBC, if I remember correctly, is managed by Peter Kho. The gym, Anderson School, has only three courts. The lights are pretty bad and the floor slippery. However, there are some good players there.

Cambie Community Centre has pretty good players. The occassional appearance of Eric is a sight not to be missed. Man what can I say, a pro is a pro.

Maybe RBC should rent the Cambie school gym at night! Aside from the few tournaments and basketball games. The gym is usally empty by 8pm. The school needs some money anyways with the recent window breaking accident and the athletic director is the badminton coach of Cambie. Perhaps someone from RBC should talk to him?
There would be 12 courts on the school side. Plus 4 if you add the community centre courts.

Eric Lim? Does he play at the night drop-ins? Or the afternoon adult one?
