Yeah ive tried it. I find that my transitions were faster and i had a little more control. But it just felt to thin and didnt fit my hand too well.

You will have more control since the grip size is smaller but your smashes will suffer. As for comfort there might be not much cushioning because you removed the replacement grip. Since i have a large hand i need a large grip size so i would never take off my replacement grip unless i wrapped at least 5 overgrips on my racket.

There isn't anything wrong with only using an overgrip. However, for me, I hated it when I tried it, there was no cushioning and it just didn't feel right for me. Replacement grip along with one layer of overgrip is my choice.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the replacement grip thicker and designed to absorb more shock than the overgrip?

Yes a replacement grip is thicker than a overgrip. Generally a thicker grip will absorb more vibration than a thiner grip.
