    Dear all,

i've been playing badminton for the pass 15 years but untill today i never know the proper way of playing a power style badminton. All i know is smashing the shuttle as hard as i can but i still do not feel the power in it. Maybe the racket was configured to be a control racket. I dunno all this because i always leave it to my dad to fix it. I never knew about power and control rackets until i was checking out rackets online. Please help me in the type of string, racket and string i should use. What kind of string tension and what kind gauge.

thanks for the help guys !

    all helps are truely appreciated.

(im sorry if i post this thread at a wrong place. im new here)

    Prefered tension for power play.

may i know the normal range of tension for power play on a thin string?

20lbs-30lbs?How thin?0.66?0.68?Hopefully the thin string can hold that long, especially at 30lbs.=P

I'm a little confuse. I'm not sure if you're asking how to play a power game in badminton or how to get more power.

If it's a power game then you just have to be the aggressor all the time. Do more power shots like smash, drives and push.

If it's power that you're after, then you'll just have to train. A man that used to trained with the Indonesian national team told me that to get more power, do more sit ups, and pull ups.

im so sorry about the unclear question. basically i wanna know how i construct a power type of racket. i wanna know wats a suitable string tension to get more power and what kind of grip i can produce more power and what string gauge can produce more power.

i would appreciate if you could recommend me the brand and model of the equipments..

thank you so much and im sorry again for the confusion.

Haha.. I think 22-23 lbs would be good for beginner-intermediates. Well.. i think this all depends on your skill level and your preference too.
But for me.. 23-24lbs. Any lower, and it feels all weird to me. I prefer higher tensions though.. 25-27lbs

    Try Armortec900Power with NBG98 at 24-25lbs.

But you know what.. if your technique is still wrong, then it's a better option to correct your technique than to get more powerful equipment.

Armortec 900 Power is good if you want a racket for offensive play. Armortec 900 Technique is also good. In general, a head heavy racket will give you a little more power on power shots.

Combine any racket with a thinner string for more power. Like BG 66, 80, or 85. The only problem you might have is that those strings aren't very durable.

I don't recommend Nanology 95 or 98 for string. Even with a .66mm or .69mm thickness, the Nanology tends to have a numb feeling to it. You can't really feel the shots at all.

An ideal racket and string for power style.
    Racket: extra stiff, heavy head
    String: thin string, low tension

I recommend AT900P with NBG98 at 22-23lbs if you want to have a power style play.

nah, if you ask me, the answer from 2003 until today is still at-700, string doesnt really matter, try all type of YY string and choose what you like

I tried on 900T, and the following are order of preference :
    1. NBG 98 @ 25Lb, not numb for me, great feel, repulsion & sound
    2. NBG 95 @ 25Lb, not numb for me, good repulsion & sound, close substitute
    3. BG66 @25Lb decent repulsion, soft sound

I tried on 900P, and the following are order of preference :
    1. NBG 95 @ 25Lb, not numb for me, good feel, repulsion & sound for me
    2. BG85 @ 25 Lb feels dead, probably a tad too high for this string & tension, changed to NBG95 within 2 days

BG85 is a vectran string and it requires that the tension be reduced 10%, i.e. 22.5lbs vs other strings to have comparable string elasticity characteristics. It feels dead at 25lbs because your hand speed at time of impact is not fast enough.

I know it is a not so ideal combo with this racket, string, and tension.
    I had a great time with the Cab30ms BG80 at 25Lb though.

well i think my technique is ok..im good at control. so basically i wanna add more power now. i know it wont make much different but its better than nothing right?

anyway i wanna thank you all who gave such good advice.

i think i will go with the bg 85 at 24lbs. will that be fine? any suggestion on tht? btw..wat does sound got to do with game play ? will it scare the opponent? haha..but i love loud noises..

    p/s thank you so much

In badminton, especially in doubles, power as desired by you is more appropriately defined as hitting a shot that gives your opponent or opponents less reaction time. In that case it is always a racquet strung at very high tension. Low tensions like 22lbs to 24lbs can send the shuttle away farther than high tension of say 30lbs but it will reach your opponents slower because of time-wasting dwell time of low tension racquets.
If you want power of the type that sends the shuttle farther, then go for low tension but at the cost of giving your opponent more reaction time. If you want crispness and sheer speed in shuttle travel, then it is very high tension.
An analogy of high vs low tension in badminton is not disimilar to a canon ball shot that can go perhaps 10 miles vs a rifle shot that travels less than a mile. In a duel between the two to the death where speed is vital, the canon man will be dead before he even starts to fire the canon.

Interesting idea taneepak. Do you have any numbers of dwell time as a fraction of the total shuttle flight time?

Are you sure the slightly lower dwell time of low tension (or even low flex) rackets wont really be a significant part of the total time it takes for the shuttle to fly from one side to the other?

thanks taneepak for the tip... yes that is exactly the thing im looking for.. a fast smash. ok now i understand it. anyway my friend recommended me to use a BG-66 instead of a BG 80 or 85 because BG 66 is a thinner string compare to both of them. So what you think ?
