Goods Donation Thanks Chris. China Sichuan Earthquake Relief – Goods Donation As most of you probably heard from Medias around the world, China just had one of the worst earthquakes in recent history, measuring 8 on the Richter scale. Although the epicenter was in Sichuan (south east of China), the earthquake was felt as far away as Beijing (1,500 km away), Shanghai (1,700 km away), even in nearby countries. The estimated death toll is as high as 50,000, with tens and thousands missing or buried and left about 48,000 people homeless as towns turned in rubble. In the wake of this tragedy, a group of volunteers are partnering with Australian Red Cross in organizing a series of charity events to raise funds to assist earthquake sufferers, to help them get through this disaster and move onto the rebuilding of their homeland. Other charity events include a friendship soccer games, donation/information sites around Melbourne city and some others in the planning. The charity sale will be held at the same time/venue as the friendship soccer game. We will setup goods drop-off points to receive donation goods before the event; anything with market value is highly regarded. Small items are preferred, e.g. accessories, memorabilia, handmade artwork, books, etc. All proceeds from the sale will go towards Chinese Red Cross’ China Earthquake Appeal; Red Cross Officer will be present for the event to monitor and to collect money raised. Donation Drop-off points Time: 27/May/2008 – 29/May/2008 5:30pm – 8:30pm Venue: Federation Square (opposite Flinders station) Charity Sale Time: June 1st, 2008 2pm Venue: Melbourne Albert Park Bob Jane Stadium The worst moments often bring out the best in people and every little effort counts towards making the BIG difference. Please show your love, sympathy, generosity and support to all the WenChuan Earthquake victims and their family. Contacts: Rachel (all_the_best_2008@hotmail.com) Stephanie (freesia_9999@hotmail.com)
China Sichuan WenChuan Earthquake Relief – Goods Donation . Thank you for the info LilyG. Here is an email sent to me... And it mad me cry. ====== * ====== start email ====== * ====== There were so many touching stories from the WenChuan earthquake. I cried so many times watching the news coverage in the past week. But this forward from a friend has to rank as one of the most touching. As a salut to this mom, I have translated the original into English, so my non-Chinese-speaking friends could read it, and pass it around, too. It's a story that should not stay only within the Chinese community. When rescuers found her, she was already dead, crushed by the collapsed house. Through gaps in the rubbles, they could see her posture. Kneeling on both knees, her entire upper body bent forward, held up by her two hands pressed against the ground, as if performing the ceremonial bow in an ancient ritual. Except, her body had been compressed out of shape and looked somewhat eerie. A rescuer extended his hand through a gap and confirmed her death. He called out to her, and tapped on the bricks with his shaft, but received no response. As the team walked toward next building, the squad leader suddenly turned back, yelling as he ran, "Come quick!" He came to her remain, labored to maneuver his hand under her body, searching. He called out following some rummaging, "There's someone, a child, still alive." With some effort, rescuers carefully removed the debris burying her, found her child lying beneath her, bundled in a little red blanket decorated with yellow flower prints. He was about 3-4 months old. Shielded by his mother's body , he was totally unharmed, sleeping peacefully as he was brought out. His soundly asleep face warmed the hearts of all rescuers on the scene. As the rescue team's doctor unbundled the blanket to examine the baby, he discovered a mobile phone tucked into the blanket. He subconsciously looked at the display, found there was a SMS message. "亲爱的宝贝,如果你能活着,一定要记住我爱你",看惯了生离死别的医生却在这一刻落泪了,手机传递着,每个看到短信的人都落泪了。 "My Dear Baby, If you were to stay alive, you must remember that I love you." No stranger to the pain and sorrow brought by death, the doctor nonetheless wept at this moment. The cell phone was passed around, every person who read the message wept. ====== * ====== end email ====== * ====== .
