in the old forum, we did a brief survey of bicep and calf circumference. This correlates to power generation ability. Right now, i like to conduct a survey of the BMI. It would be neat to know the BMI profile or range among badminton players in this forum. To find out your BMI, go to
    http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/bmi_tbl.htm
and from the BMI table select your BMI number.

Don't be alarm if your BMI is over 25 in which that website classified you as being overweight. We had discussed here before that muscle weigh more than fat so a muscle double players can have a BMI over 25 easily.

This is my first attempt to create poll, let see if this work.

Thanks to those people who had participated in this poll. On a side note, i thought there would be more people participating this poll. Of the 200+ members, only 11 people voted. More samples would be nice. In the 'what your next racquet' poll initiated a week ago, we got 22 votes. Hmm, seem like there are more people thinking about their next racquet than about improving their physique. Just my opinion of course.

ZXZ, this is what i got what from another website.

BMI is determined by your weight in kilograms divided by your height (in metres squared).

It is designed for men and women between the ages of 18 and 65 years. A healthy BMI score is between 20 and 25. A score below 20 indicates that you may be underweight; a value above 25 indicates that you may be overweight.

BMI has its limitations for determining whether your weight is ideal or not (eg, it cannot distinguish between lean muscle and body fat). If you have concerns about your weight you should mention it the next time you visit your doctor.

BMI result What your BMI result indicates
    19 or under UNDERWEIGHT
You are under optimum weight for your height. You could afford to gain a little weight.
    20 to 25 ACCEPTABLE
You have a healthy weight for your height.
    26 to 30 OVERWEIGHT
You are over optimum weight for your height. You may be facing health problems, so losing some weight would be a good idea.
    31+ OBESE
You are over optimum weight for your height. You may be facing health risks, so see your doctor to help you achieve a healthier weight.

I believe a muscular person with BMI over 25 is healthy too as muscle weigh more than fat. BMI also can't tell how fit a person in term of cardio vascular (ie metabolism and circulation). A MS player tend to be in the lower end and a MD player tend to be on the higher end of the range of 20 to 28. I'm not a doctor so take this as a general comment and not a recommendation.

    no, it's age independent.
BMI just indicated what you weigh in relation to your height.
If you were taller, u would weigh more.
If you were shorter, u would weigh less.
In both cases the BMI (a ratio) likely to end up similar

zxz, i apologize for my oversight. Yes, that website did gave a range of ages where the BMI is said to be valid. However, that is just a general guideline, we all know that phyiscally, we all grow and mature at different rates. (some even never matures ;) ) Somebody just arbitrary assigned 18 and 65 as the bounds and need not to be rigid like traffic speed limits where 30 mph is ok but 30.1 mph you are speeding and breaking the traffic law. Therefore, your bmi of 22 is very respectable, take advantage of that and play lot of singles because as most of us ages, our BMI goes up. I had a BMI of 20 during my university years and now, just wishing i was 20 again, age and BMI wise :(

it's useful to play tournament as it will sharpen your mental toughness. As in your case, the stress was reduce after your math exams and you played much better. In tournaments, it's too late to worry about techniques.

If the National Institutes of Health use the same data to figure BMI as the Army formerly did, then factors such us ethnicity were not added into the data. That can make one's BMI even less accurate. For example, some young men trying to become soldiers who had a linebacker or fullback (American Football) type build were denied by the Army 'cause they were deemed "overweight"--even though their body fat percentage was sometimes less than 5-7% and they were very strong. The BMI scale is VERY general, and it is just as likely that you are in a completely different category actually than the one that the table showed you are in. Everybody has some variation in their body shape, and even without factoring in ethnicity or race, which also can be determining factors in size and shape, we are so different from one another that BMI can only be a general scale. However, I'm not trying to fault this survey; it is a great way to get a fairly accurate general description of the body types that all of us so-called "badminton players" have.
By the way, it's nice to be back on the forum, I've been away for quite some time and I missed all you guys:)
