    Greetings,

Without some of the top players, the Singapore Open 2008 Super Series Tournament still provides some interesting matches.

For the Mens Singles, we have the following matches:

    (1) 4:45 pm : Hans-Kristian VITTINGHUS (DEN) vs Sairul Amar AYOB (MAS)
    (2) 5:05 pm : Eric PANG (NED) vs Joachim PERSSON (DEN)

Usually, I don't have time to play Sandy's Pick-A-Winner (PAW), the Predictions Game, but here I will attempt to make my predictions (highlighted) to see how many (out of the 15) I could score. :p:p:p

    Cheers... chris@ccc

Good attempt but you need not choose every match in the PAW game in just Round 1. You should only choose those you are confident of which can score many points for you. And the limit is 28 picks for the entire SO proper! :)

Currently, Ronald SUSILO (SIN) and Yu CHEN [7] CHN) have better fitness

KlasseE ... From what I have heard... Currently, Ronald SUSILO (SIN) and Yu CHEN [7] (CHN) have better fitness. And for that reason I have picked them to win.

Chong Wei Is The Man, Says Gade

    From Dan Guen Chin

SINGAPORE, June 9 (Bernama) -- If Peter Gade is forced to pick a winner for the Aviva Singapore Open men's singles crown, his choice is obvious - Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei.

Not because the field is depleted with the spate of withdrawals of the big names from the US$200,000 championship starting at the Indoor Stadium Tuesday, but Chong Wei's current form makes him the outstanding favourite.

In a tournament where there is no Lin Dan, the world's No 1; no Taufik Hidayat, the reigning Olympics champion from Indonesia and no Park Sung Hwan, newly-crowned Asian champion, Chong Wei, is the No 1 seed and rightly so.

"For me, the two best players in the world today are Lin Dan and Chong Wei. Lin Dan is not here and therefore Chong Wei is the red-hot favourite. Those who want to win the crown must beat Chong Wei first.

"For me, if I clear my early rounds I will have to come up against Chong Wei in the semis and that's a very tricky match. I saw Chong Wei at the Thomas Cup in Jakarta last month and the signs are all there that he is in top form," said Gade who is seeded No. 4 in the tournament.

For the 30-year-old Gade, it has been a season of extreme high and low.

Low when he suffered a lung infection which saw him broke two rib bones early in the year but yet he came back strongly in the Thomas Cup to give Denmark a place in the semi-finals.

"I am feeling good at the moment and my performance at the Thomas Cup has given me a lift especially after the long lay off I had early in the year.

"Singapore is special to me. I have been playing here a long time and won the title in 2006. I like to have another win here and as I say if I can reach the last four and then beat Chong Wei, I have a chance," Gade told a press conference.

But yet the injury jinx continues to haunt him.

After he returned home from the Thomas Cup, Gade suffered a freak injury on the small finger of his left hand which saw his hand all bandaged up.

"I was in the kitchen and then the plate I was holding slipped from my hand.

And while trying to retrieve it, I ended up suffering a deep cut. It was quite bad but that's no excuse. I can still play badminton. No, it will not affect my performance here," he said.

Gade is down to play a qualifier in the opening round before he meets Hong Kong's Ng Wei in round two and a possible meeting with Malaysia's Yeoh Kay Bin in the quarter-finals.

Danny Bawa/Vanessa Neo forced Nova/Liliyana in 3 sets

It's pity PBSI didn't hire Danny Bawa to Pelatnas although he was Junior Kejurnas winner in MD (with Afiat Yuris) and XD (with Debby Susanto)

I don't think I've seen this young man Danny in action yet but that was a tremendous show against Nova and Butet. Vanessa, our local girl, must have improved a great deal! Very good and keep it up Danny and Vanessa! :D

It's nice to know that another foreign import Singapore XD pair of Chayut Triyachart and Shinta Mulia Sari beat the Taiwanese pair of Chen Hung Ling and Chou Chia Chi 24-22, 13-21, 21-19. ;)

I also notice that the Taiwanese are making quite an impact on the badminton scene of late.
