IBF to Decide New Scoring System on May 18 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Xinhuanet 2002-05-12 17:30:10 GUANGZHOU, south China, May 12 (Xinhuanet) -- After the hot discussion on the 7x5 scoring system at its annual general meeting which opened here on Sunday, the International Badminton Federation (IBF) has promised to make the final decision on May 18. IBF President Korn Dabbaransi said:"Our members have authorizedthe IBF council to make the final decision on the new scoring system. We will surely give our answer to the world on May 18, here in Guangzhou." The 7x5 scoring system, which led players to play a best of five games match, each game ending at seven points, is loved by some and oathed by some all the way during its 18 months experiment time. Analysts said that the 7x5 system has turned the competition into a three-stroke game with short service, pin and smash while agility, endurance and to some extent, intelligence have little room in the system. "Some members suggested to go back to the previous time-tested 15x3 system, while others, like Denmark and England, proposed 9x5 or even 5x5. So the members have come to an agreement that give the right to IBF council and let us to determine," the IBF president said. Denmark, one of Europe's top badminton playing nations, frownedon both system, current and old, when national head coach Sten Petersen complained after their five-hour marathon group match against South Korea 3-2 on the opening day of the ongoing Thomas Cup/Uber Cup World Team Badminton Championships. "Even the 7x5 can last for more than five hours, how boring it is to come back to the 15x3 old days," Petersen said. Dabbaransi promised the IBF will decide a better system for thesport with consideration of spectator-friendly, advertiser-friendly and TV friendly as well as player-friendly. "The new scoring system will be finally settled down on May 18 as the whole world is awaiting. We can not keep them waiting any longer as the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games is coming," Dabbaransi said.
What he is actually saying: Interesting. Note that this is coming from the IBF president. From an IBF standpoint, the whole purpose of scrapping the 3x15 system was to create a more spectator-friendly, advertiser-friendly and TV friendly sport... In other words, it is clear that he does not believe in a return to 3x15. And mark that now he also uses the term "player-friendly"! Everything he is saying is pointing away from 3x15 and 5x7 and towards 5x9. Does anybody know how this vote is organized? Is there one vote per IBF member country? In other words, does Peru's vote weigh as much as China's? Or are only certain delegates allowed to vote? Which ones? How many?
THis is pretty confusing..... I just hope the IBF wouldnt change it how it is.... because its already pissing me off!!
I know! ^^ \/ Just felt like it, itz pretty interesting how the new scoring system is said to happen since 4 years ago and it only changed this year thats all..
the way they keep changing the scoring systems.....you will not only need to be a good badminton player...you will aso need to be a mathematician to cope
I don't believe the scoring system was ever officially changed, except for the dropping of the 'wood' shot and the change from two deuces (at 13 set to 18, and at 14 set to 17) to one (at 14 to 17). This year's official change is the first real change.
