Here have been many threads about backhand shots. But I didn't find any thread about safety backhand. I suppose safety backhand has a little different technique than "normal" backhand, because the racquet moves on horizontal plane . Am I right? Here is a perfect example:http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=O7Ux7OzYlQ0
But quite impressive to whip it cross court being so late and taking it close to the floor behind you.. Pretty impressive .. but Taufik isn't known for his weak backhand /Twobeer
That backhand clip.. ...is similar to this one, at around 2:01..except this one was taken at a higher point.. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XQiYwtOhpLo
But does anyone have some technique tips how to do that hit? Because I see it's different compared to "normal" backhand clear.
It is a backhand clear taken deep and low, cleared cross-court to the back to frustrate the opponent from going in for the "kill" at the net. If the opponent had been further back in the center court, Taufik could also have the option of returning a straight backhand drop from that low position. It is very difficult to hit this shot. A cross-court backhand drop taken late and low, with very limited arm action but with a strong wrist snap, is much easier for ordinary players.
Positioning and timing.. ..if one notices, there's quite a bit of timing that plays into executing that shot. Also, Taufik's arm & body positions/angle, are just about right. But yeah, not easy to execute, as Taufik has a very2 good/strong backhand/wrist.
Here's a video : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RSQUiCN_wwg Notice that when he wants to backhand clear parallel, his foots are aligned horizontally and my coach once told me that if you want to do crosscourt shot, your main feet gotta be stepped in front of your head and have an angle of around 45 degrees
