Joby Gorillapods

    i'm using the gorillapod slr zoom (the biggest one). it's quite useful as a lightweight tripod and for attaching to bridge railings (to avoid seeing the railings when using a wide angle lens) but it's not as strong as the marketing pics would suggest. i find that d700 + 17-35mm/2.8 is sometimes a bit too heavy for the gorillapod legs to keep stable. i certainly wouldn't try attaching my 70-200/2.8 sideways to a light pole as they show in one of their marketing pics.

    there are also many copies of the gorillapod available in china and on ebay. one hilariously named copy is "monkey grip". i tried one of the clones before and i found the legs were much weaker than on a genuine gorillapod. if you only use d40/d70 or 400d/450d sized bodies with kit lenses then fake gorillapods are probably strong enough.
