I am a decent player always improving my play, love the game, my power is ok, I reali have to put in a lot of effort to clear from line to line which at the start of a match is ok but near the end is harder lol but i can do it & my backhand is decent. I am thinking of restringing my racket, currently at 24" to 26". I currently used BG - 65 i think but thinking of using nanology 95 string I want more power with my shots esp clears with less effort but also get more control at the net, which is pretty good at the mo, but if i had a bit more would be handy Whats ur thoughts?
How do your strings feel now; too bouncy to generate more power, too tight for you to generate power? Whether you feel that the strings feel too soft or hard will determine if your tension should be changed. Can you hit the sweetspot accurately consistently? If you cannot hit the sweetspot a lot, and it feels too hard and tight, go down by 2lbs. If things are too bouncy, too loose, then go up 2lbs. If it's sorta loose, sorta bouncy, then go up 1lb.
When I was a beginner, my string tension is only 21 lbs. I played with no problems. I can control the shuttles and it feels good. But as I get better and better, I felt that 21lbs is not my cup of tea. When I smashed, the shuttles did not generate enough penetration force even though I got the power. So I changed to a higher tension like 26 lbs and later 28 lbs. Now I have gotten used to 28 lbs because it gave me the bounce I need to make sharp drop. I feel nice too the hear that 'ting' sound when the shuttle is hit. Not the normal 'thug' sound if the tension is too low. I use good string like the Yonex titanium. It costs bit but the quality is better. Actually I asked around, Wong Mew Choo's sister told me she used the Nanospeed 7000 racket with 28 lbs of tension also. She can generate a powerful smash with that racket. I was amazed the way she controlled the shuttle effortlessly.
