I borrowed a VCD from a friend yesterday, and the last track was part of an old match with Poul-Erik Høyer-Larsen playing against an Asian opponent. Actually, I didn't see Poul-Erik's face, but his style is just unmistakable, so I'm 100% sure it was him. A VCR date had been recorded in one corner of the image, and it said the year was 1990. There was a lot of NTT logos around the court, so my guess is that this was a match from a Japanese tournament, perhaps the 1990 Japan Open. So, does anybody know if there was such an event, and if Hoyer played that event, and (assuming that this was the final) who his opponent might have been?

Should be the 1990 thomas Cup.

    The Denmark/China match was televised.

If it is China/Denmark then opponent

ought to be either Zhao Jian Hua , Xiong Guo Bao

    or Wu Wen Kai.

Thanks! That must be it... remains only to figure out who the opponent is... :)

They both look so stylish, all dressed in white. Sports fashion has really changed a lot, and yet it's only 12 years ago...

But not everything was better in the old days! ;) It's filmed with one static camera, with a very narrow tele lens, so there is almost no perspective at all. For an untrained eye, it would be really hard to understand the depth of the court and the speed of the shuttle.

That's the 1990 Thomas Cup alright, filmed from

a corner high upon a light green mat.
I am assuming the match you refered to was the semi

    between China and Denmark.

Of course if it was a gp match it could have been Msia, Ina or Korea.

    Can't really see Poul-Erik's opponent.

Anyway, in 1990, Poul-Erik played as 1st singles for Denmark.
China's singles line-up consisted of Yang Yang, Xiong Guobao and Zhao Jianhua.
Malaysia had Misbun, Foo Kok Keong and Rashid at that year.
Indonesia was represented by Alan Budi Kusuma, Ardy and Joko.

From the image, it could not be Misbun (a chap with lots of monkey hairstyle) or Joko (player in that image has much fairer skin color).:D

So, it's either Yang Yang, Alan or Ardy.
Very likely to be Yang Yang as I could remember Poul played Yang Yang in 1990's China vs Denmark tie, where China trashed Denmark 5-0.

Yang Yang, Jianhua, and Guobao what a line up! Although first two are all time greats, (I could watch videos of those two for hours), only saw Guobao play once and he didn't seem really outstanding. Maybe he had an off day! Any ideas for the strongest TC cup singles line up for any particular decade??
