Very interesting pics Gladius and very informative!!

I found a webpage that said the shutterlag for the 5DM2 as being a few millisecs slower than the 30D (which I have).

What ISO were you at?

Did you have the AF assist points on?

AF-Assit was on. I almost always leave it on. ISO was between 800-3200, varies as I adjust between shots for aperture to see what works best.

haha. yes, agreed. we are not only sharing photos, but share our love for both hobbies/sports.

good stuff Gladius, the FF look is very distinct here and very sharp.

Glad you like the photos. As for tips, can't really say how and what other than the settings I used as the process of taking the photos itself is very instinctive.
The fact that I play the game itself certain helped to anticipate the timing, expecially of those with the racket face swatting the shuttle. Other than that, not sure how should I articulate it either...

Post #38 about summarizes the settings and equipment used. Hope its of help.

..number #1 & most important is one has gotta have the right equipments first (camera body & lens(es)). After that, then we can talk abt the settings...Without #1, one can forget abt the settings..

*Great effort, Gladius. May i suggest, for your future attempts, to take more of the faces more than the backside of the players.

Yep agree, on the equipment.. I think my equipement is adequate enough.. but since mostly I like lanscape and nature so I'm pretty much 'green' in taking badminton photo..

OK, so I am highly impressed with the AI Servo.

Here is a shot on the ice rink

The subject is in the middle but quite small. I was already at the limit of my zoom (200mm).

This is the crop of the centre part...

What impresses me is that the girl is in focus. Notice the red and white cone behind her? My 30D would have focused on the cone instead even when aimed at the girl. My 350D was even worse at keeping focus on the subject.

The 5D mark II here has got it right.

Here's an even closer crop of the area.

PS. no comments about the exposure, noise etc. Just checking the AF. FYI, original pictures is underexposed due to the reflective nature of the ice.

..yep, looks like the AF tracking area & ISO of the camera have definitely improved.
I would take it, all the newer model Canon DSLRs (50D, 5D MkII, 1D MkIII) have really improved on those 2 areas.

The noise factor is pretty clean esp. @ ISO-800, even with the cropped pics.

Now, I've used the 50D, 40D and even the 1D MkII and noticed their AF tracking & even the ISO setting is not really there; the 1D MkII is a bit better, but can get better. The 50D's AF tracking system is a bit better than the 40D but not by much; ISO setting has definitely expanded.
Using the 1D MkII, usually this is what i've found. For close up photography, using the AF Ai Servo mode is probably better as the object/subject we're trying to focus is pretty large enough & appears much more in the AF region (that 45 pt AF area). However, once we get a bit far away from the object/subject, it'll be quit tough as the object/subject gets smaller and tends to go out of the AF area. When that happens, i tend to jump to the One Shot mode and hope for the best result..

Here's some examples of 5DmarkII coping with user error (i.e. mine

)

I just noticed some PR event at lounge and had my camera handy.

Gross underexposure - hadn't noticed the camera was on manual (sheesh)

You can see the original. I think it's about 3 stops underexposed.

For the 2nd picture, I corrected the exposure of the sRAW1 file using DPP. The transferred to photoshop for some minor curve adjustments. No noise reduction nor sharpening.

3rd picture is 100%crop.

Don't know about you guys but I was well impressed...

Can you please post 100% view? I want to see the noise, normally what I know when correcting underexposured photo, it will make noise worsen.. this one look amazing

The third pic is already the 100% crop after correcting the exposure in DPP!! I didn't do any noise reduction. The noise is there and worse but the colours are still really good. Imagine if I had used the correct exposure....
