World Junior WD Champions 2008
By Dev S Sukumar, Badzine Correspondent live in Pune.
As the final day dawned, it looked like China would take home four titles. They were assured of two because the men's singles and mixed doubles were all-China affairs. Singapore delivered the first blow when Fu Mingtian and Yao Lei played a flawless tactical game to outwit defending champions Zhong Qianxin and Xie Jing.
Fu and Yao was reunited just three months ago after nearly two years apart. Fu Mingtian has been concentrating on singles and this was her first international outing in doubles in over a year.
Even so, they were exceedingly confident before the final. They took the pace off the rally, prevented the Chinese from getting under the shuttle, and displayed finesse at the net to unsettle Zhong and Xie. Even though the first game remained close right through, it was obvious the Singaporeans were in control. By the middle of the second game, they pulled away as the Chinese started committing errors, disoriented by the lack of pace.
(The Singaporeans took the crown from the defending champions 21-19, 21-17 in 28 min.)
Fu/Yao's win marked both the first World Junior title for Singapore and the first time a pair from outside of China has won the girls' doubles title.

But Yao Lei is forging an increasingly solid partnership with Shinta Mulia Sari and they are in contention for a title in the Yonex-Sunrise Vietnam Open GP in two weeks time, having troubled many Pelatnas pairs many times this year

And Singapore needs Fu more as a singles player with Xing, and now Zhang, the prodigal daughter, to shoulder the WS responsibilities. Unfortunately Gu Juan seems to be lost forever and Li Li has thrown in her towel much earlier. Singapore's once hopeful Women's team has now been reduced to tatters!
