Rashid, Rexy named chief coaches of BAM’s 2012 programme
KUALA LUMPUR: It is confirmed. Rashid Sidek and Rexy Mainaky have been appointed the singles and doubles chief coaches under the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) 2012 London Olympic Games programme.
And their immediate task will be to appoint their own set of coaches and players in the next one month.
The BAM yesterday unveiled their new coaching and training structure by placing all the coaches and players from the elite to back-up squads under one roof.
Previously, the BAM had two separate squads — the elite and the back-up — under the helm of one chief coach — Yap Kim Hock.
Kim Hock has now been re-assigned as a doubles coach under the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) badminton programme. He will work under chief coach Sun Chenhua.
BAM deputy president Datuk Roland Wong said that 49 players — 18 singles and 31 doubles — had been named under the programme.
Even players like Kuan Beng Hong, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Ong Soon Hock, Tan Bin Shen, Gan Teik Chai and Lin Woon Fui have been given a second chance to revive their badminton careers.
Roland said general manager Kenny Goh had been appointed acting project manager.
Kenny’s task will be to take over the adminstrative workload of the coaches.
“Rashid and Rexy are our head coaches but, unlike the previous chief coach, they will have a list of their own players under them,” said Roland after chairing the BAM’s coaching and training committee meeting at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara. (Committee chairman Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh was not present).
“Kenny will take over their administrative work load. “The chief coaches have been given the power to place the players under three groups — elite and two back-up teams. They will also appoint the coaches. The players’ performances will be reviewed every four to six months.”
Rexy is also expected to form a solid mixed doubles squad.

BADMINTON: BAM picks Rashid, Rexy
By Ajitpal Singh
2008/11/01
AS expected, the BA of Malaysia (BAM) has appointed Rashid Sidek and Rexy Mainaky as the national singles and doubles chief coaches, respectively. The surprise though was the decision to shortlist 49 players for the 2012 London Olympics project as BAM had earlier said it would focus on quality, not quantity.
Former national chief coach Yap Kim Hock, as speculated, was redesignated as the doubles coach at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).
BAM deputy president Datuk Roland Wong said Rashid and Rexy will concentrate on coaching and not administrative work as BAM general manager Kenny Goh will be the acting project manager.
"The duo will select their own set of coaches, to be recommended to BAM later. They can also recommend outsiders," said Wong, after chairing the BAM coaching and training committee meeting in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
"Rashid and Rexy will be in charge of the national elite, back-up elite and back-up squads. Some shuttlers will go directly under their guidance."
Wong also said BAM will review the performance of the shuttlers every six months.
"The shuttlers will have to perform or face the axe. The door is still not closed on those not selected under the programme. The coaches will be monitoring their performance and will be considered if they impress."
"The project squad will also be prepared towards the New Delhi Commonwealth Games and Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010. As for the Thomas Cup, we are currently lacking quality players in the singles. We need to be realistic when it comes to targets," he said.
Meanwhile, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced yesterday that the US$500,000 (RM1,775,702 ) Super Series Masters Finals will take place in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on Dec 18-21.
The highest eight ranked players or pairs in the Super Series rankings list will qualify for the finals.
However, shuttlers must compete in at least eight out of the 12 Super Series events to be considered.
China's Lin Dan, the Olympic gold medalist in Beijing, will be among the big names not competing as he has only played in four out of 10 Super Series events.
