Hi, Im Migzz, 16 yrs old, badminton fanatic/contender from Philippines I'm a Men's doubles champion of our district and our division, and now will be competing against all the districts in our province, (hope we could reach the regionals) and i would just like to ask and discuss if Shouting while smashing is OK while on a tournament? Cause on our last tournament, i received a warning because of shouting when im about to smash, i use it as a deceptive shot, for example: "exaggerating my movements, pretending that im preparing to smash, then as soon as i see my opponents ready to defend my smash at the back of the court, ill just flick it to make the shuttle drop right infront of the net, then they cant reach the shuttle cause they anticipated that it was a smash" the umpire said it was illegal, and almost have given me a yellow card, for doing it for the second time, i was very pissed off, cause me and my partner cant manipulate the game wisely Is it illegal to use shouting as a deceptive shot?
Where I play in California, it is definitely not illegal. Many professional players also shout before a smash to trick their opponents. I don't know why the umpire said it was illegal.
There is a line between shouting, and intimidation. For example, if you are celebrating a point, you cant raise your fist and shout while glaring at the opponent. So often you see pros turn away before they celebrate. So maybe you overdid the shouting into what the umpire considered to be over-aggression? Personally I just keep a poker face. No sense in motivating the opponent to try harder lol. Even things like the umpire warning you can help motivate an opponent.
yep, im intimidating my opponents by glaring on them, maybe that's why i got a warning, cause i red a book, about killing an opponent (Obviously, it was a martial art book that i could not remember what the title was) and it said that deep intimidation makes your opponent weak even though he's much better than you, im trying to apply that tactic on badminton, but maybe some umpires disagree with that style, Thanks for posting a reply
Markis Kido definitely shouldn't play in your region.. He shouts very loud. I don't think there's any problems with shouting.. but it is banned at some minor tournaments.
From what I understand: shouting to celebrate a point is okay, shouting when smashing is tolerated.. But shouting for no apparant reason is distracting your opponent, which is indeed illegal So....yeah, you should have gotten a yellow card, sorry. Anyway, if you ask me, trying to intimidate your opponent by glaring, eying him down, or just saying stuff to him, is just sad... and not to forget
yep, sometimes i glare at my opponents while into the game, like when they are about to serve, staring at them straight to the eyes, but im not glaring at them after a good powerful smash, but there's a time in our championship game, (like when i got the warning) im really in to this "Killer Instinct Mode" so i tend to glare at my opponents, after we win the rally, yeah, bad sportsmanship, hehehe
Agh, I find shouting annoying, even when celebrating a point. The only time I actually utter a sound is when I tell myself how crap the last shot I played was.. it usually comes out as a Nnhhhghgyaa. Just play the game, win with your shots not your macho.
Thats what im trying to say, sometimes when im in a "Killer Instinct Mode" i cant help but to glare i cant consider it as cheating, i consider it as a tactic, and its used by many athlete,
Err.. kill her partner, offer sympathy, offer to be her new partner on court, then off court. Ok, that's the long term game plan... now back to the short term game plan...
there's nothing wrong with glaring at someone. but if you combine it with shouting and waving fists, then that's probably going too far. although you can take a lot of lessons fron a kung fu book, there's a limit to how much you should apply to other matters.
But what if that person is *not* hot and you glare at that person, does it mean that you're telling him/her that he/she is hot, but you're telling a lie? Any how, it would work as a distraction.. he/she will be thinking about something else, and not concentrate on the game
I think the person who does the staring would be more distracted if the person he/she was staring at.
I wonder how many time you guys have to shout if you keep shouting when smashing. Against good opponent your smash comes back like 70 % of the time, then you smash and shout again, and again, .
